The Carolina Theater hosts Retrofantasma, one of the longest running monthly film festival in the country. A monthly film series of double-features dedicated to bringing classic horror movies back to the big screen in 35mm! Created in 1998, RETROFANTASMA has developed a large dedicated audience of horror movie enthusiasts whose desire to see their favorite terror flicks is matched only by their willingness to cheer at the screen.
In August Retro is moving boldly into the late 80's and early 90's (it WAS more than 20 years ago, after all) with two extremely weird horror films. Pumpkinhead is the first film to be directed by special effect genius Stan Winston. Definitely a B-movie, but one with heart, and brains, and (of course), entrails. Largely a cautionary tale against the evils of dirt bikes, and the young punks who ride them.
The People Under the Stairs was released in 1991, but it's hard not to see it as Wes Craven's ultimate comment on the Regan Years. Blackly funny, and featuring evil slum lords, a gimp suit, incest, a chest of treasure, and a shotgun it's not the best movie in Wes Craven's history, but sweet buttery Jesus, it gets close to the weirdest.
Tickets for the double feature are $8.00. Our group will meet-up in the upstairs lobby prior to seating at 6:30. Brazil starts at 7:00, and THX-1138 starts 15 minutes after Brazil ends. Get there early for good seats, since Retro goes to great lengths to make the experience as immersible and fun as possible with an awesome intro, period trailers, trivia, and even a raffle.
