Hiking at Umstead

Focusing on the 'active' part of Active Gamers join me for a hike and maybe lunch to follow.

I'll be leading a 5 mile or so hike through Umstead State Park*. The trails are fairly simple and the trails are well-marked, but I would encourage you to wear appropriate footwear.  Also, it'll likely be brisk early in the morning, so layers are encouraged.

For anyone who is interested, we'll be heading to Lynnwood Grill for lunch after the hike.

Both the hike and the lunch will be dog-friendly, so if you have a well-behaved dog, feel free to bring him or her along.  I will have my husky Dakota along.

Please be sure to be on-time for this event, as our group will be leaving promptly at 10:00.  Stragglers will, naturally, be hunted for sport.

*Obviously, this event is weather-dependent

Couldn't have asked for nicer weather for our hike. I'm glad everyone had a good time.

I am going to skip lunch as well. It wouldn't feel right to go if Dakota can't go.

I would be up for lunch if others are attending.

Thanks for the update, John. That being said, who all plans to stay for lunch?

Just a quick update on Sunday: I've just gotten back from Lynnwood Grill, and they've put their 'greenhouse' up over the patio. This means that there are no dogs allowed. Obviously, this means Dakota and I won't be heading to Lynnwood for post-hike food or drink. Everyone else is, of course, still able to go there as originally planned. I've already told them to expect a fairly large crowd. But folks who are planning to bring along won't be able to take them. So a small change in the agenda for Sunday. Everything else is still a go. Please be at the Umstead Visitor Center Parking lot at 10:00 am sharp!

    Thanks,

    John

Really wanted to come, but now I have to go out of town for work. I was looking forward to meeting you (especially your husky, John, since I just put mine down :( ). Have fun!

Right now the weather looks absolutely perfect for our hike. Please note that we do have a waitlist for this event, so if you cannot come, please change your status ASAP. Also, if you are planning to join us for lunch at Lynnwood grill after the hike let me know so I can arrange for a table to accommodate all us hikers, human and canine.

    I'll see everyone on Sunday.

Wow, this filled up faster than I expected. Here's our proposed route for the hike (Follow along at www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/wium/pics/parkmap.pdf): Starting at the Visitors Center parking lot, we'll be heading to Sal's Branch Trail, and heading counter-clockwise. When we reach the lake we'll jump over to Pott's Branch Trail/Oak Rock Trail before finishing up the last section of Sal's Branch Trail. That should be a bit more than 4.7 miles. If anyone if feeling tired or sore after the first part of Sal's Branch Trail, there are benches and picnic tables located at the lake and the entrance of Pott's. If you need to rest, you can stay there, and the group will pick you up before we head back to Visitor's Center via Sal's Branch Trail.
