Beer & Boardgames (& a movie): John Dies At The End Edition

Ben Franklin said “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy,” President Lyndon Johnson referred to boardgames as “incredible inventions.” Now the chocolate and peanut butter that is Beer and Boardgames is together at last!

For January we return to the traditional 'last Sunday of the month' for B&B, and stage a return the location that proved such a fertile cradle for the first 2 B&Bs: O'Malley's Irish Pub! And, as usual at O'Malley's, we will have a private room in the bar with a big screen TV, and a coin-operated fozeball and pool table. Sunday's usual specials will be in effect: All draft beers are $3.00 (including Red Oak, Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks), there will also be a food special (it's usually wings, I recommend the lemon pepper).

But, wait! That's Not All!! Expanding B&B's reach a bit this time around, we'll be concluding January's B&B with a trip to the Raleigh Grande (located off Lynn Road, about a mile from O'Malley's) to take in a screening of soon-to-be-cult classic John Dies At the End. John Dies At the End (or JD@TE, as folks in the know call it) is a movie I've been looking forward to since it debuted at Sundance last year. I'll be heading to the 7:00-ish showing (the movie doesn't premier until that weekend, so I'll update times when they become available), and you're all invited to join me.

So come join me at O'Malley's Irish Pub on Sunday January 27th at 2:00 pm. As always, we'll have a large selection of games on-hand, including several varieties of Risk, and games small, large, simple and complicated.  And, as always, duct tape name-tags (it's a thing now)!  If you're going to bring a game, please list it in the comments, and let me know if you're willing to run or demo

As always, I'll need a good head-count so I can inform the manager what type of set-up, and service our group will need. We've had a disturbingly high number of drop-outs and no-shows for the last several B&Bs (including last minute status changes), which hampers my ability to accurately inform our venue of what sort of service Active Gamers will need. If you sign up, please come to the event.  If something comes up, please let me know as soon as possible, so folks on the waiting list will know not to make different plans.

See everyone there.

I always enjoy coming out to these! The group is so laid back it makes it easy to start playing a game.

Great fun with good folk! The board game Escape was STRESSFUL in a fun way! And enjoyed ending the night watching John Dies at the End which is equivalent to a 2-hour long Old Spice commercial with gore O_o

They have a brand new menu since our last meet-up there. I know they have a breakfast section, but honestly I'm not sure how long it's in effect. I have found in the past that O'Malley's in almost always very accommodating.

A bit more information on the movie: John Dies At The End is directed by Don Coscarelli, the genius behind the cult movies Phantasm and Bubba Ho Tep. I've read the book the movie is based on, and the best description I can come up with is Hitchhikers Guide to the Apocalypse, except told through the filter of two stoner 20-somethings from a dead-end Midwestern town, rather than a hapless British middle-class loser.

It's probably going to be termed a 'horror comedy,' although it's much more horrific than comedic (again, if it's anything like the book). Based on reviews from the festivals, it's destined to become a cult hit alone with movies like Dead Alive and The ReAminator. In short, it should be bloody good fun, but it's probably not for the faint of heart.
