to help fight against the anti-gay marriage amendment.
This event will include dancing, a live DJ, ballroom dance lessons, a voter registration booth, a photo booth, crafts, and info tables.
Who we are:
A coalition of around 20 families from across the Triangle has come together to fight against the anti-gay marriage amendment. We're standing up for love in our state. Want your family to become a sponsor? Click here.
Why hold a dance party?
Too much of the anti-gay amendment debate has focused on fighting hate instead of celebrating the love bringing these couples and families together. A Valentine’s Day Dance offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate love and commit to working for justice. All funds raised at the event will support efforts to defeat the amendment."
In addition to the dancing, we have some seriously fun activities planned, including a “flash mob for equality”. As part of an effort to entice Ellen Degeneres to speak out in opposition to Amendment One, a local group led by Leah Long has created a "Moves Like Ellen” dance and video featuring Ellen’s signature moves done to a parody of Maroon Five’s “Moves Like Jagger”.
Everyone’s invited to check out the video, learn the moves, and come prepared to join us as we “flash mob” for equality! You can find the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKnWvEclRkM.
While there’s no pressure to participate, we’d love to have everyone join us. Learn the choreography, and we’ll perform it at the dance, flash mob style. We’ll be filming it at both dances to send to the Ellen Degeneres show in hopes she’ll support our efforts to stop amendment one from passing in NC. We can also use the video to send to local media. It’s a fun, unique way to show your opposition to Amendment One (and maybe even get on Ellen’s show!) And don’t worry - the moves are easy to pick up. Just check them out on the video so you can try them out ahead of time.
This event is crossposted with multiple Meetup groups.
