genteXt Book Group: Books, Bars and Beers April 2009 Meetup

  • Apr 27, 2009 · 8:00 PM
  • City Beverage

Incognegro by Mat Johnson Zane Pinchback is "incognegro": a light-skinned African-American man who travels through the American South during the early 1900s to report on the lynchings. When his last story goes wrong, Pinchback barely escapes with his life and wants out of his undercover reporting. Instead, his brother is charged with the murder of a white woman in Mississippi and he is sent to investigate. Through twists and turns, Johnson and illustrator Wareen Pleece use the graphic novel format to explore the meaning of race and identity.

Though the run of dark & serious books was mocked at the beginning of the meeting, I think Incognegro produced one of the most vibrant discussions yet. Lots of strong opinions, personalities, and intellects made for an outstanding discussion.

Very lively discussion tonight; lots of different points and devil's advocates, which I love -- makes life more interesting! Good times!
