February Book Discussion of Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Join us for our next book club!

What if you could live again and again, until you got it right? On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war. Does Ursula's apparently infinite number of lives give her the power to save the world from its inevitable destiny? And if she can -- will she?

Darkly comic, startlingly poignant, and utterly original -- this is Kate Atkinson at her absolute best.

We missed you Lynne! It was a wild book-lots to talk about. I agree that it was a good discussion.

i had to change my RSVP to "no."
I just didn't get far enough in this book.
    wish I haD......have a great conversation!

(or is it worth attending anyway?)

As long as you don't mind hearing spoilers, you are always welcome to attend even if you didn't finish the book. I think there are lots of things to talk about that don't necessarily hinge on knowing the ending (if there is such a thing in this book).

Hopefully all the roads will be clear. We'll still meet at 4pm. Christy reserved us a table. Thanks Christy! If you have not updated your RSVP and cannot attend, please do so. That way we are not waiting for you on Sunday to arrive. Thank you!

I'm in the irresponsible "Oh, just a few minutes before bed" phase. It feels like I've spun a spinner and wonder which life it will end up pointing at.

I too was perplexed with the book at first, but I recommend continuing to plug away, and don't hesitate to go to the index to revisit the previous times a year happened. It helps to clarify things (though I now have September 1940 down pat! :) I can't imagine listening to it, and look forward to hearing what it was like from those of you who did.

interesting comment, Christy. I too am listening to it from Audible. Agree the narrator is v. good. However, I am wondering if I would be less confused if I had the print book. I am not very far into the book yet, but am pretty much thoroughly confused!!!

I agree about Life after Life growing on you. I have to put in a plug for the audiobook version. The narrator does an outstanding job with a vast array of accents. Should be an interesting discussion next week.

If you haven't seen this already, you might want to check out Amazon's list of 100 books to read in a lifetime: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=8192263011

By my count, our book club has read about 15 of these over the past 5 years, including this month's selection.

Hello Readers! I want to point out that there is another book published with the exact same title; therefore please make sure that you are reading the book written by Atkinson! Happy reading!

I am so sorry I missed last Sunday. I had another event earlier, and I lost track of the time, wouldn't have gotten to group until 5. Kate Atkinson is fantastic. I'm looking forward to reading the book and seeing you all next month.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
