Urban Athletics: Palisades Park Beginner Night Hike

*** No need to RSVP "No" if not attending ***

I've gotten more than a few requests to do this event again so if you missed it a couple of months ago, here is your chance to dip your toe in the water and get an introduction to the excitement of what a night hike is like on this beginner-friendly trek. And the best part -- you can get there with a single swipe of your metrocard.

The Plan ...

This will be a relatively easy night hike, taking us across the George Washington Bridge (GWB) and through part of the Palisades Interstate Park.

We'll start out on 178th street and walk over the bridge on the pedestrian pathway – it's a great walk with fabulous views of Manhattan and New Jersey, made even better at dusk. This is a bit of a different experience than crossing over other urban bridges as the walkway is at the edge of the span and you can look straight down at the Hudson river.

Once over the bridge we'll turn North and head up the Long Path in the Palisades Interstate Park. This is the beginning of the Long Path hiking trail which begins near the GWB in Fort Lee and continues 350 miles north to Albany. We'll walk about 4 miles up the path through Allison Park and descend to riverside where we will break for dinner. There are great views here of the Hudson River, GWB, and the Washington Heights and Inwood sections of Manhattan. By now it will be completely dark as we make our way back to the GWB and Manhattan, with only our headlamps and the soft glow of the distant city lights to guide us.

A $2.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your organizer is in the running for hardest working person on meetup.

The Important Stuff …

  • Distance traveled will be about 8 miles. This is a beginner night hike but that doesn't mean come unprepared! Wear clothing appropriate for the activity and sneakers/hiking shoes are a must. Also do not forget your headlamp/flashlight and insect repellent.
  • Bring water and dinner/snacks, we'll be stopping about halfway through the walk to eat.
  • Bathroom opportunities will be limited along the walk, so please coordinate your fluid intake accordingly.
  • RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited. If you RSVP and I notice you have a number of no shows or a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Rain cancels the hike.

Meeting Point/Mass Transit Directions ...

We'll be meeting at the entrance to the GWB pedestrian walkway on the corner of 178th Street and Cabrini Boulevard. Take the A subway train to 175th Street and walk three blocks north, turn left, and walk two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard. We'll be starting the walk promptly at 6:45 PM, please don't be late.

Well, whoever is still with me, I am having a caffeine infusion at the moment in the dunkin donuts on 178th and Broadway. Come join me. I'll see what it is doing at 6:45 when the Meetup time is, but I think we are still going to be able todo this. No one can ever accuse me of being a pessimist!

I'm not so concerned with the rain. Might be a possibility of t-storms, which concerns me. I'll head to to the meeting place - hopefully weather will be okay.

Folks, my mobile number is[masked]-9034. If you have any problems contact me. Please be on time as I can't wait for latecomers. As of now I am planning to proceed with this event, but if the weather takes a turn for the worse in the next couple of hours I still may postpone it. Check the meetup site before you head uptown.

    Also make note ...
    1) This is a beginner night walk, but that doesn't mean come unprepared. Wear the appropriate clothing and foot wear, and make sure you have a headlamp or flashlight, snacks, and enough water/drinks for a 4 hour trek. I'd also bring insect repellent.
    2) There are limited bathroom opportunities along this walk. Be sure to use the restroom BEFORE we start the walk.
    3) When you get to our meetup start point, please seek me out so I can sign you in. I'll be the dude with the orange whistle around his neck. Also, please bring small currency for the meetup fee.

    Thanks!

Hikers, the weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon/evening is looking iffy. Be sure to check here before you leave for the meeting point, I will make the decision whether or not to postpone this event by mid afternoon.

Kevin - Had a family member fall ill in Boston area; things are rocking and rolling and not sure I'll be here Friday. Too ambitious a commitment for me as you know I live 35 miles or so outside of city. Next hike when things settle. - Leigh

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
