Perhaps in Japan it was big (pun!) -- but according to Wiki the first public release was in '95, and the first English mailing list was '99. Maybe there are some hardcore yanks who also speak Japanese that can claim using in before 95 when it was Beta :)

Ruby's been around longer than you think - it's about 18 years old now.  But *Rails* is quite recent.

Ruby just used to be more of a Perl competitor, at least in how it was used.

I thought the same thing when I read > 10 years of Ruby experience. Even the geekiest and bleeding edgiest of my friends were still only thinking about ruby in 2000 :)

I remember seeing a job posting in 1998 that said "5+ years Java experience". James Gosling would have barely made the cut :)

Bala,

This description sounds pretty reasonable to me. Most of the folks
that I work with fit the bill.

Unrealistic is stuff like '7+ years of Ruby on Rails experience is a
strong plus' - I see nonsense like this all the time from CMMI
services firms that have taken on Rails work.

Best,
Sidu.
