Re: [ruby-81] Anyone using rbenv instead of rvm?

From: Drew D.

In the past few months, I've moved my development machine (Mac OS) over to rbenv, as well as most of the servers I operate. I've been pleased with rbenv in both settings.

Two suggestions I can offer:
* install and use ruby-build with rbenv (same author): https://github.com/sstephenson/ruby-build
* for Rails apps, Bundler can do everything that you used to do with rvm gemsets in terms of separating gems; I only learned this after I actually read the Bundler docs: http://gembundler.com/rationale.html

Below is the .bundle/config file that I use in my Rails projects, which sets the flags for local installation of gems. The gems get installed to a directory like RAILS_ROOT/.bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems. Because .bundle is a dot folder, Textmate won't try to index and search it when I open up RAILS_ROOT as a project for editing; otherwise Textmate would go crazy trying to search all the gem files.

---
BUNDLE_PATH: .bundle
BUNDLE_DISABLE_SHARED_GEMS: '1'
BUNDLE_BIN: bin

Also, there is rbenv-gemset, an extension that supports gemsets as in rvm, but I have not used it at all: https://github.com/jamis/rbenv-gemset

Hope this helps,
Drew

Jon, I noticed from your pastie content that you're not on the latest rvm. Try "rvm get latest" to see if the latest version behaves better.

If so, how's it working? rvm is breaking on me (http://pastie.org/3026139) and getting help is problematic at best so I'd really like to find a replacement. If not rbenv, is there anything else out there?
Thanks...jon
