We are a group of people who like to get together and discuss English language novels. The club (pronounced "Elba") includes people from MeetUp, FB ex pats, the Anglo-Swedish Society, and the British Club in Gothenburg.
In our first season (2014) we read six novels by Jane Austen and held a Jane Austen Evening that October, hosted by the Anglo-Swedish Society and attended by about 50 people. This was a great success and generated a lot of interest in the book club.
For the second season (2015) we branched out into novels with a loose connection to some of the themes and motifs in Jane Austen's novels.
In the third season (Nov 2015 - May 2016) we read English language novels that our core members had recommended.
In the fourth season (Sept 2016 - May 2017) we will read more suggestions from our core members. Criteria for inclusion are loose, but we like to include books that members have always wanted to read but haven't gotten around to, or books that are topical and interesting, or books that lead to interesting discussions. The only really strict criteria are that the books have to be less than 400 words (so that even busy people can read them before the meeting), and that they must be available in paperback and on Kindle.
Members suggested a total of 14 books this year to add to our shortlist. From this shortlist, eight books were chosen via a delphi method at our bookstorming in June.

Our meetings are held in English in a museum apartment in Haga, Gothenburg. We meet at 18:30 on the third Tuesday of each month. We discuss the book for about an hour and then have a 'fika' and have a more free-ranging discussion for another hour. For the fika we try to provide home-made cake/food to a theme based on the book being discussed. The cost of the meetup is 20 kronor each, to pay for the room and the fika.
Each meeting has a discussion leader who gives a brief introduction to the book and gets the discussion going.
