Well done to everyone who took part - great to 'feel the buzz' when we entered the room! Huge thanks to all the organisers and everyone who has given their time and experience, too! :)

An inspiration to see the young people creating coding projects of their own from scratch.

I would like to say THANK YOU to all members of the DogTrotter group! Congrats to all of you - we wouldn't get this 2nd place if we were not working together. Keep in touch! Good luck with your own future projects!

Canterbury Hub Members! I think I may have been misunderstood where we are first thing tomorrow, I thought all day at the Turner but this is wrong. Dorine will confirm with the end of day email so keep an eye out for it. Sorry for that and my apologies!

Have to drive to other side of planet this Sunday. Bother.

... byt the way, I'm also old and cantankerous, opinionated and in my 50s. No-one makes tea like I do.
One delightful crit, recently, freom the kids (yr9 ish) when I had been asked to give a presentation on my computing career, was:

    "Not so many 'old' people."

After a bit, I wondered how many young ones there were with a career? (See 1D, I suppose)

    February 22, 2013

    • Dorine Flies

You are not alone in that I am sure "The perfect cup of tea" is an excellent way to get people to think about the implications of writing a program :) what I like most is we all end up with TEA but in our own way under a common banner of TEA!

      February 23, 2013

This is too deep for me, Dorine.
Java scone? Quite fancy one with me tea ...

Jonny Freeman who is giving the awards will be arriving with me (he has a pass via Marine Studios). I already have a GEEK pass for my husband but he may be with me too. So, just rsvp-ing in case.

Want to encourage use of IT and programming in the youff.
Doing my bit as a STEM ambassador, but no event I've attended (or been offered) has been based around IT. Disappointing, this is.
I'm twice CRB checked. Keen to visit IT depts and steal their good ideas, pontificate my own ideas (always right) and be bought coffee and biscuits. I am a serious professional.
Have developed Picaxe activity for Junior school level, which includes a £10 kit. They make the kit up, burn their fingers, correct errors and program the whole shebang to their delight. Of course, it no work - that's coding!
The old man was too slow for them, though, and the activity needs "re-engineering" with a teacher (not I) so it assimilates better with the kids. 10 different pre-made projects - all fit in old ice-cream tub - that sort of thing.

So that's what I'm doing. What does EPIK do?
What has it *done* with kids?

It's OK to fail is our view and a fundamental part of being an engineer, as that is the best tool to learn, build methods and especially give us problem solving skills :)

      February 23, 2013

    • Dorine Flies

As to answer what EPIK does, it there to get young people exploring how to be a digital maker rather than its perpetual consumer, I search high and low for people who are passionate about what they do and are able to then share that love for making with our kids/youths in concentrated bursts - for that 1, 2 or 5 days the mentors attention is 110% focused on getting the kids making and experiencing the process of making so that they in turn once they go home can continue to make

Hello, can't wait to go! This is very exiting! Is there a chance to do a presentation? If so what is the best way to do it? I can make a video or a power point. Thanks. I will be there both days. I hope that's ok. Thanks.
