This is philosophy done within the Houston intellectual community. A reading group and a working group, the Enlightenment and Philosophy Organizing Collective of Houston (EPOCH) is intended to provide an anchor for discourse and action, and to nurture the community of Houston-based philosophers and/or thinkers. The collective brings together those persons, who explore the philosophies of the past and present, as well as, enlightenment movements and other global thought movements.

EPOCH is an academically oriented group, meaning that respectful exchanges should be aimed with precision and anchored within a larger context, while not shying away from meaningful critique. Newer students to philosophy and perhaps philosophically-minded artists, writers, or practitioners should feel comfortable expressing ideas and exploring the discourse as we all sort through literature and media, looking for the good or, at least, interesting ideas.

The collective not only reviews literature and other media, but also acts as a critical sounding board for the working projects of its members. An ideal should be reinforced that philosophy should not be epiphenomenal, but, through discourse with the public, new ways of thinking may introduce positive changes in our future.
