4am Project

OK. Guys and Gals, This is a tough one.

But we need to put Dubai on the map.

What is the 4am Project?

"The 4am Project is a ground-breaking global photography project that aims to encourage worldwide social collaboration to capture a view of the world at the often unseen time of 4am.

Since it’s launch in April 2009, the project has attracted participants from nearly 50 countries, and there is a digital archive of over 7000 images and is one of the biggest world-wide photography collaborations."

I have already participated previously in the Project and Karen Strunks who is the initiator of the 4am Project is looking forward to our participation.

The idea is to take and upload your picture shot between 4.00am and 5.00am on April 14 - 2013.

We will meet on April 14 for briefing at 03.30am at the JBR Walk - Car Park just before the Hilton and start shooting at 4am.
Debriefing and breakfast at 5.30am. You will be the first one back at the office ;)

It is a tough one in terms of timing. It will be still night in Dubai as twilight will be at 05.33am. But we will have some moon light as the moon will be at 90%.

I don't expect many people to come, but it will be one hell of an experience.

Whose up for it?....literally!

As Jason said, it depends on the pic. However as a fail safe shot, I suggest the following: ISO200/800 (based on camera sensor) - F8/11 - Speed to be determined by aperture - Of course camera locked on tripod and metering on Spot. Best alternative is to bracket your shots with Matrix metering.

      April 13, 2013

    • Leonor

Uhmm i am still learning on the nyt shots thats jus my wory - am using Nikon 5100 i will be on tripod - as advise i will be using[masked] as i dont have 200... thank u again

The Car Park next to the Hilton is open 24hrs and the charge is AED5.00 per hour. But I expect street parking to be plenty.

    April 12, 2013

  • JayEim

    1- Gear
    - Tripod or Monopod
    - Fast lens to cover a focal length of +/-20mm and[masked]mm.

    2- People shots
    - Make sure that no recognizable face of any subject appears in your pic.

    3- Categories
a- Panorama shot from the sea shore
    b- The Walk street shots
c- Long exposure for car lights
d- Overhead shot from the bridges crossing JBR Walk
e- The cranes next to the Hilton are lit all night and might give interesting effects
    f- Closed coffee shops
    g- Open coffee shops
h- Lit windows on facade of hotels and buildings. C/U as well.
    i- The JBR staircases
j- For the hardcore people, I suggest to shoot in UV or IR.
    k- Light Painting
    l- Any other ideas......

Please be daring, be adventurous and most of all be respectful and have fun!

You have plenty of time on the weekend to look up the website and get inspiration from previous subjects and shots:
    http://4amproject.org/
    Upload instructions on the website.

Both Jason and Zaki will be present for assistance.

Hello! Karen here, from the 4am Project. Just wanted to drop by and say hello to you and say thank you to JayEim for organising the photowalk! It's going to be one of the biggest 4am Project photowalks outside of the UK! And by the looks of it, a truly multi-national event. Feel free to tweet me @4amproject and I'm happy to give your walk tweet-outs. And also feel free to add updates to the 4am Project Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/4am-Project/114027808623358?ref=hl Just to mention: Photos can be taken any time between 4-5am. Then uploaded to flickr. There is no deadline for uploading your photos. Most people upload within a few days, but it's up to you. Tag them '4amproject' and 'dubai' and if you can geotag them, that would be awesome! http://4amproject.org/get-involved/

I hope you all have an amazing time! I wish I could be there too! :)

1- Karen just advised me that we are on the 4am Project Facebook:
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/4am-Project/114027808623358?ref=hl

2- No you do not have to upload your pic between 4am and 5am.
I am asking Karen how long the window will stay open and will get back to you.

3- I am also asking her on the Dubai/EPyC tags?

    April 8, 2013

  • Arno

Low light shooting, that s great. I love it, Tripod, Torch, Patience, 2 batteries...
    Shot between 4 and 5am.
    Then upload between 4 and 5am :o
If I understood correctly, you need to upload your pics between 4 and 5am right?
    Is that the correct understudying?

    April 8, 2013

My last word should be understanding

Sherien, those events are the best way to learn to use your camera. Training sessions are only intended to give you the knowledge, however going out & shooting is what really improves us. Approach any fellow Canon shooter on location whenever you need assistance. I myself am a Canon user.
