The Hike: 6.5 miles with 1500’ elevation, this is a challenging hike in a large loop in and out of 4 different open space preserves (Monte Bello, Coal Creek, Russian Ridge, and Skyline Ridge). We will be using five different trails: Crossing Skyline Blvd. to Skid Row – White Oak - cross Alpine Rd to Meadow Trail-- Cloud’s Rest – Cross Skyline to the Ridge Trail back to Parking Lot.
We’re going to share some great sights: the trails will take us up and down ridges affording great views of Black Mtn. one way and Mt.Umunhum the other. Eventually we will also get some wonderful views across the Bay to Mt. Diablo. Lots of meadows, oak forests, chaparral, and we should even see some silk tassel trees, my favorite.
Directions: Either go up Hwy 84 to Skyline or take Page Mill Road up to Skyline. In either case, turn left on Skyline. About a mile past Page Mill Rd. you will see on the right a yellow sign with a ninja horse and rider on it: underneath the sign it says "400 Feet." Just beyond you will see a call box on your left. The entrance to the parking lot driveway is on your right just past the call box.
If the gate is closed, park on Skyline Blvd. on the right just before the entrance. If the gate is open, go on through and stay to the right until you get to the parking lot (and the toilet, which is one of the good ones, by the way).
If drive to the xmas tree farm with the weird little blue house on your right, you went too far. If you get to Portola Heights Road, you went WAY too far!
