Living the Dream- Exploring Intentional Community

UPDATE- Saturday Oct. 19, 1:56pm

Earthship Enthusiasts- have you ever thought about living in a sustainable intentional community milieu and would you like to at the very least explore the idea, or eventually go as far as to follow through with living the dream?

We invite you to come share your thoughts, ideas and wishes with fellow Earthship Ottawa members! Live the dream with others who feel the same way...

This event is being held as a result of conversations that have been had between a few of our members over this past summer. It will be a completely informal meeting which would allow interested parties to tease out and solidify some of their ideas and to share them with others who may be interested in participating now or in the future.

It can be seen as a first step towards making this type of dream (if you've ever dreamt it) possibly happen with others, who, like you, are interested in intentional community living, leading a sustainable life, the dynamics of taking part in a community and sustainable homes, like Earthships.

We'll see if it would be possible to move towards the establishment a core group of individuals/families with the end goal being the beginning a process towards building an intentional community, possibly one whose members live in Earthships or other sustainable types of homes.

Some possible topics of discussion include:

- types of community arrangement
- community values and goals
- types of housing
- sustainability
- incorporating Permaculture practices
- government/decision-making
- economic opportunities within the community
- finance, fees and money aspects
- skills and resources
- possible locations
- levels of participants' commitment at various stages

+ many more-- everything is up for discussion!

No pressure, no commitments- just putting it all out on the table over a beverage and seeing if any of this could be possible.

Since we are currently in house-hunting mode, it is simply a matter of making things work while obtaining my own objectives. No real promises except to say that if we are able to achieve our family objectives by living on some big land, this would be the next natural step for me. For now, we are still looking in town, and out of town may be a stretch on this go-round.

No matter what, though, I think committing the idea of a "Libertarian Commune" (wonderfully opposite terms that need to be seen together more often) is something we should flesh out and commit to paper or electrons.

Wow- What a productive meeting! Aileen, Steeves and Dylan, thanks for participating. An inspiring conversation- a foundation for some really wondrous dreams of lives to come true. We thank the Green Door Restaurant for having taken us in absolutely without hassle without reservations. Over some yummy food and beer we skimmed through local examples of intentional communities (IC), making some comparisons of their types/purposes, legal incorporation, and leadership and decision-making styles. Then we visioned what life would look like for each of us in our ideal IC, which then led into Dylan and Steeves' more concrete plans for such endeavours. Dylan; if you build it, we will come! Let's talk again- another meeting to further delineate our IC ideas would surely be in order seeing where this one took us. Let's digest and come back together again after some more thought. A write up of our community visions and notes on commonalities will be posted soon for all our members to explore.

Yes, Tom... that's a good idea.. I will take a look at regional examples of intentional communities and bring whatever I find to the meeting to share. Sorry you can't be there, I'm sure you would have a lot to speak about.
