Creating Community

!! I M P O R T A N T !!

PLEASE READ THE MESSAGE BELOW BEFORE DECIDING IF YOU WANT TO COME ON SATURDAY and adjust your RSVPs accordingly-- I was answering Linda's concerns, but they apply to everyone who was thinking of coming...

We are meeting to move our dreams forward. Something concrete is taking shape. We are a group of people who have already made their decisions to create a community, and to live together, and we have opened the invite to others who want to do so as well. We are on the verge of beginning to make this a reality, but it can't happen without the "homework" of which we speak. There will be a lot of further homework as well. This isn't a meeting for general discussions/debates about intentional communities in general; rather, it is the beginning-- a visioning-- of what we want to create for ourselves together, and to see what kind of a group of like-minded people will coalesce around these common visions. This is a meeting to explore the 'hows', and not the 'ifs' or 'whys'. It is open to those who already know that this is how they wish to live, and not for those who are not committed as of yet. None of us have done this before, so we are all new to it, but the crux of it is the decision that we want to go ahead and act on our wishes. As EO has new members join continually, yes, there may be fresh members who may want to join the older ones as time goes on and explore and perhaps become involved in this particular group's visions, relationships and structure. But we cannot keep going back to general discussions- we are simply going forward and if people want to join with us, then we have opened this option up to them. Please carefully consider whether you are truly ready to go ahead and follow your dreams of living in community right now before you come out. This is not simply a social event. It will be once the meeting comes to a close, but we are there to VISION and to lay foundations. Thank you all for your understanding.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: Monday, April 7, 6:30pm-

Alright everyone- we are dropping the maximum attendee limit for this meeting. It seemed wrong to hold back when people want to participate. Whoever is truly interested in creating and living in an intentional community and is serious about making the dream a reality can now feel free to come out and talk about it on Saturday. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU COME PREPARED AND HAVE YOUR 'HOMEWORK' ready!! This means take some time to write down the following:

 - YOUR VISION- brainstorm everything that you do want to see in our community (as opposed to what you don't)

- YOUR OPPORTUNITIES AND YOUR BLOCKAGES to coming together to manifest the dream

- YOUR SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCES AND RESOURCES that you can bring toward building our community

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: Monday, April 7, 1:45pm-

Our selected location will enable us to eat some good pizza throughout our meeting, unwind with some games of pool after, and then participate in karaoke at 9pm for those who want it...!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Following from conversations amongst our group throughout the past year, the meeting we had last fall which was never followed up, and the more focused determinations of late, we are making a date to get together and keep exploring our wishes for the creation of an intentional community.

Those who RSVP, please make a list of items that they would like to discuss. I will start the list here with my own items and await others:

-VISIONS OF WHAT WE DO WANT (as opposed to what we don't) in our community

-the community building book that a few of us were talking about to use as a learning journey/structural guide to our future meetings

-our opportunities and our blocks to coming together to manifest this community in a brick and mortar way (so to speak ;))

-the skills, knowledge, experience and resources that we can bring forward to building our community

That book that I mentioned, which one of our members introduced me to and has to lend is:

Hi, I am dealing with a mirgraine. I can not go tonight but would like to hear about what happened.

I'm truly sorry everyone, but I can't make it to this exciting and fun meeting that we have in the works for today. My little girl has been flushed with fever and throwing up since yesterday afternoon and I just can't leave her today. I wish things were different. We'll continue our discussions/plans at further meets. Please enjoy the meeting amongst yourselves, and if someone is taking notes, I would like to read them later to know how things went, what turns the conversation took, what was solidified today, etc.

At some point it's good to look around at what others are doing.

Looks like this weekend is all about building communities! I'd love to go to this open house!

Hi guys- yes, this sounds exciting. Didn't know that LEV is having an open house this weekend! I have to see if my little girl improves by tomorrow morning, or I may not be able to attend any of the meets I was planning to get to Saturday, and probably won't be leaving town to go anywhere far from her (even though her Daddy will be taking care of her) if she's sick. I do think that you guys should go on Sunday if you have the opportunity. I will see if I can make it, but would definitely need to carpool with someone.

Hi Agata, I guess you have made me think. Although it is my dream to build an EarthShip, I want to stay closer to my son and grandchildren, so Lanark is a little out of the way as I am looking to retire in the next 4 to 9 years. Thank you for making it clear, although I was really looking forward to the event, I will leave it to those that do want to create this community.

Hi Suzane- no one knows where our community will be situated as of yet. Lanark is nice country, but we don't have anything solid in the works. I do understand your hesitation to move anywhere that may be far from your grandchildren. Who knows where we'll end up?... maybe it will be close enough that you will be able to live there, if all the other pieces fit... We'll keep you abreast of developments.

"have your homework ready" is a little intimidating - after all, we've only just met. Is this discussion open to newbies? I have very little knowledge/experience with intentional communities, only interest.

    • Linda

Thanks for the explanation. I am ready to live in community but certainly not ready to commit to EO just yet. I'll look forward to the next meetup.

That sounds good, Linda. See you next time.

Is there something concrete going forward with the Lanark option, or is it still an open thing? I'm still looking to get land eventually, but waiting until my house is sold.

    • Agata

Hi Dylan- everything is still wide open. We're just getting together to talk and get to know one another, see what kind of a core group of members with a common vision will whittle itself out.

Hoe do I (and Annice) get on the wait list for the meet up on creating community?!

    April 6, 2014

    • Agata

Hi Camille- good to meet you guys yesterday! I have RSVPd you, and that was the last spot, but no worries-- just come with Annice on the day. We are still trying to figure out a location. It will most likely be at J&N's in Overbrook. Usually, if the RSVPs are full, you can click on something that says 'I want a spot'... That way you can get onto an event's Waitlist.
