We hope to find other birthmothers in the Bay Area who might like to connect so that we can attempt to process and heal any grief we might face. We are not psychologists, just other birthmothers who would like to share our experience and pain with people who understand what we are going through. We intend to build a community of birthmothers so that you can have continual support (i.e., through meetups, phone conversations and emails with other group members, as well as utlization of our discussion board). The literature on the birthmother experience demonstrates that we face a lifelong trauma that will spiral in many different ways. Community is one way in which we can attempt to grow and move through that trauma.
This group is open to only birthmothers. Many of us have found that there is much support available for the other two partners in the adoption triad (adoptees and adoptive parents). Some of us believe that birthmothers are the hidden, unsupported members and that we need to be able to connect with one another in order to process our grief. Natural mothers in both closed and open adoptions are welcome. And of course women of any age are encouraged to join.
