So what's the worst part of most book groups? Being forced to read a book you simply don't want to read. And what's the best part: getting all those great book recommendations! In this meet up, we're going to dispense with the book *reading* and go straight to the recommending ... and we'll do it with a game I call the "Book Auction". Each participant brings 2 of their favorite books (1 fiction, 1 non-fiction) -- these can be books off your shelf, or new purchases from a store. At the door, everyone receives poker chips. One by one during the game, you will attempt to auction or "pitch" your book to the group and get a "buyer". The better your salesmanship, the more chips you receive, and the more chips you'll have to bid on other books. Highest bidders for each book get to take it home...and voila: new, recommended books for everyone...books that actually sound GOOD to you, because YOU bid on them. :) I've done 4 or 5 of these events with friends so far and they were a big hit...not to mention a great way to get some books off your shelf while learning about new ones that you've never even heard of.
