PR for Hardware Startups

Hello Hardwarians,

I hope the later daylight hours and beautiful weather are helping get your creative juices flowing!  This month we will have a bit of a twist as Chris Nicholson, a former reporter for the New York Times and currently the head of communications at TryCelery, a pre-order sales site, will give us the rundown on effective PR.  HollisWorks will once again be hosting the event and thanks to Tandem Capital for sponsoring the pizza and Legit Lager again for the beer!

Please note also, if you need a ride from bart, feel free to connect with others on this page, or you can also take the Emeryville Shuttle to the nearby shopping center: http://www.emerygoround.com/schedule-maps

7:00 - 7:30  Networking: with pizza and beer

7:30 - 8:15  Chris Nicholson - PR for Hardware Startups

Chris Nicholson

If you've ever hired a PR firm, you know the sucking sound of money getting poured down the drain. Is it possible to pay thousands of dollars for PR and see zero results? Yes. This guide will teach you why PR is broken, and how you can improve your chances of getting coverage.

Chris Nicholson, a former New York Times reporter shows entrepreneurs, inventors and online merchants how to create strong, mutually beneficial relationships with reporters, and tell effective stories. For startups that have built good products, the difference between success and failure comes down to PR
and marketing.

8:15 - 8:45  Demos: 2 min's intros from attendees who want to announce their product or service.  Feel free to bring a prototype, but beyond your prototype, just you and a microphone to keep things moving.

8:45 - 9:30  Networking

Upcoming events:

1) BeMyApp Factory Hackathon March 28-30 - in SF and build a prototype of a connected object with your team. We will provide components and tools, but BYOH too. Entire hackathon is free. The winning team will receive full access to the BeMyApp Factory

2) Impossible Hackathon: March 29th - Users interact by stating their hopes-such as a desire to #learn Spanish or to find a #jogging buddy-and are matched to other *impossible* users who can grant those wishes based on their skills and proximity. Everything is for free and the only currency is an abundant one: 'thanks'.

If you have any announcements you would like us to share with the group, please send me an email.

Hi folks - thanks for coming out for the talk! Fun to meet you. Anyone who wants to dig deeper should read the ebook on our site. It's pretty thorough, and gives concrete examples of pitches and other things.

Hope to see you again soon!

Great presentation and contact; very inspiring! Oh yeah, plus delicious beer and pizza; what's not to like?! Well, chairs for the presentation part would've been nice.

Good call on the chairs. I agree. We'll get there. Thanks for everyone's patience as we build out the space!
