East Bay L.E.A.P.S. Monthly Meetup

  • July 18, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

At our monthly meetings, Lyme patients and their loved ones can meet to discuss the challenges faced in diagnosing, treating, and coping with Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness (including babesiosis, bartonella, and erlychiosis). In general, we do not discuss the political aspects of this controversial disease, but on occasion we take on special projects of political activism.

Come with your knowledge and compassion, a willingness to share your experience, and most importantly, to listen to others. LEAPS is a place where Lyme patients and their supporters can feel accepted in a constructive, nonjudgmental group setting and work toward healing.

Meeting Date: Third Thursday of the month.

Meeting Time: 6:00-8:00 PM

Meeting Location:
Kaiser Hospital-Oakland (Campus Map)
Mosswodd Building, Room 1170 or 1171
3505 Broadway St, Oakland (Google Map)

Parking: Underneath the Mosswood Building or on nearby side streets.  Do NOT give your keys to the valet parking attendants.  Tell them you will be staying late.

Public Transportation: Free Kaiser Shuttle Bus from Oakland BART station to Kaiser Main Hosptial (Shuttle Bus Info).  You'll need to walk a block or two from the Main Hospital Building to the Mosswood Building.  Kaiser campus map here.

There was a couple that went through the Kaiser system. They said that they work with an internist in oakland, Dr Yu. But I forgot to ask his/her first name (the doctor). Does anyone know how I can get a hold of the couple and get the name? Thank you.

Hi Doan. I realize this was posted back in July, but it caught my attention today. Did you ever get in touch with the doctor? I suspect the couple you are referring to is Hines and May.

Grace, I had to apply twice to get Mepron for free. I eventually did get three bottles. I believe Malarone is a lot less expensive than Mepron though I haven't tried it. I had no trouble with Mepron at all and I do think it helped. it tastes funky And looks pretty bad. Another approach you might take is posting an inquiry on the big California Lyme disease listserv, asking if anybody knows a way to acquire some Mepron, and to contact you off the list by private email. There are some pretty generous people on the list.

I'm done with the Babs treatment now. Yay!! Now that we've gotten rid of the Bart and Babs we can go back to treating the Lyme.

Emily, a spine surgeon at UCSF wanted to fuse my three cervical vertebrae that were out of sync, due to disc problems, C5, C6 and C7, but I didn't go for it. I have an inversion table that helps me to hang upside down essentially and takes the pressure off of the disks. Now I am fine. i just chalk it up to borrelia running around, Inflaming joints and my back, even though the MRIs and x-rays show desiccated disks. The pain seems to come and go randomly. That is a typical Lyme symptom. Most of the time there is no pain. Personally, I think it's muscle related rather than pinched nerve related. This clearly was not the case for Denise, who had surgery in Germany. She was definitely helped by getting new disks. Anyway, I would encourage anybody with migrating large-joint pain (knees shoulders, back etc.) to be patient, take anti-inflammatories such as curcumin apply heat/cold, and stay away from inflammation-causing foods. It may just get better on its own.

    Hi All,

I'm wondering if any you have any ideas on how I can get some free or low cost Mepron for my Babesia. I'm at the end of my treatment for Babesia- I only have a few weeks left on it, but I'm almost out of the med and I'm totally in the poor house. I don't qualify for the manufacturer's free Mepron program. So far the med has helped me tremendously. I know people who do the full 6 months tend to have more success with getting rid of this ugly illness. So I really want to be able to complete the full 6 months. Any ideas are much appreciated!

I got a lot of good information! I appreciate the feedback from all of you, especially. I wanted to ask one of the members something from last night, the lady with the neck surgery. I just got my recent cervical MRI and my neuro said that I have degenerative disk disease in C3, C4, and C5....she's recommending physical therapy, if anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it or any PTs that are good let me know. My neuro was surprised and said that I was "too young" to have this. Thanks for the support, everyone! I will keep you all in my thoughts!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
