Let's return to The Paramount Theatre in Oakland for another Fantastically Fun Friday Film event!
THE MALTESE FALCON (1941) - A dastardly crew of crooks is in pursuit of a gold and jewel-encrusted statue of a falcon worth a king's ransom. But when private eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) gets involved, the stakes shift dramatically. This first motion picture directed by John Huston also featured Bogart's first starring role in a Warner Brothers film and is indisputedly one of the finest film-noir classics of all time. The movie script follows the original Dashell Hammett novel almost word-for-word and the cast delivers their lines with such panache, it seems impossible to imagine any other actors in these roles. Nobody can toss off Sam Spade's sneering tough-guy wisecracks like Bogart. What actress other than Mary Astor as the conniving Brigid O'Shaughnessy could lie so seductively? And, of course, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Elisha Cook, Jr. play their villainous roles to absolute sinister perfection.
I highly recommend getting there early to purchase a ticket (box office opens at 6:00) as events such as this tend to sell out quickly! Let's meet up in the front of the theatre no later than 6:30 and secure a spot in line. Doors open at 7:00 pm and seats fill up fast! If you would like to go, but cannot get there by 7:00, please send me an email (through this MeetUp site) and I will see what I can do to make sure you can get in and sit with our group....

If you have never been to the Paramount Theatre before, or have not yet attended one of the Friday night movies there, you are in for a treat!
One of the nation’s most beautiful art deco theaters and a national landmark, The Paramount in Oakland is like stepping back into the past, into one of those glorious movie theatres of times gone by. The majestic lobby with its gold decor, curving staircases, and elegant lighting have a grand feel. When you enter the main theater itself, it's like walking into an art deco feast of the senses. Even the bathrooms and lounges are eclectic.
Local history, art deco beauty and a classic film all for only a $5.00 admission! And they even sell beer, wine and a few other adult beverages in the lobby along with a few assorted movie snacks and small bags of popcorn and caramel corn.
Film showings at the Paramount include a half-hour organ concert of classic songs (starting at 7:30), followed by cartoons, newsreels, clips of coming attractions, and even a raffle drawing with prizes such as dinners for two and other local attractions.
Really, five dollars is all it costs to see a special one-night only screening of the classic film "The Maltese Falcon" on the big screen! What a great deal!
