"North by Northwest" at The Paramount Theatre

It's time to return to The Paramount Theatre in Oakland for another Fantastically Fun Friday Film event!

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) - Classic Alfred Hitchcock: suspense, intrigue, comedy, humor. A sleekly handsome Cary Grant as hapless advertising executive Roger Thornhill is the perfect match for the innocent (or is she?) Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) and the sinister Phillip Vandamn (James Mason). As Roger criss-crosses the country on the run from a mysterious cabal of spies, he encounters some of the great Alfred Hitchcock's most iconic set pieces - including the famous crop duster scene! And, of course, the film's finale on Mount Rushmore is one of cinema's greatest climaxes. Academy Awards for Best Writing, for Best Art Direction, and for Best Film Editing.

I highly recommend getting there early to purchase a ticket (box office opens at 6:00) as events such as this tend to sell out quickly! Let's meet up in the front of the theatre no later than 6:30 and secure a spot in line. Doors open at 7:00 pm and seats fill up fast! If you would like to go, but cannot get there by 7:00, please send me an email (through this MeetUp site) and I will see what I can do to make sure you can get in and sit with our group....

If you have never been to the Paramount Theatre before, or have not yet attended one of the Friday night movies there, you are in for a treat!

One of the nation’s most beautiful art deco theaters and a national landmark, The Paramount in Oakland is like stepping back into the past, into one of those glorious movie theatres of times gone by. The majestic lobby with its gold decor, curving staircases, and elegant lighting have a grand feel. When you enter the main theater itself, it's like walking into an art deco feast of the senses. Even the bathrooms and lounges are eclectic.

Local history, art deco beauty and a classic film all for only a $5.00 admission! And they even sell beer, wine and a few other adult beverages in the lobby along with a few assorted movie snacks and small bags of popcorn, cheese popcorn and caramel corn.

Film showings at the Paramount include a half-hour organ concert of classic songs (starting at 7:30), followed by cartoons, newsreels, clips of coming attractions, and even a raffle drawing with prizes such as dinners for two and other local attractions.

Really, five dollars is all it costs to see a special one-night only screening of Hitchcock's classic film "North By Northwest" on the big screen! You can't beat that deal! And it's Cary Grant!

I'm here, sitting in front next to the line. Wearing jeans and a black running jacket. Is any one else here?

    Hi Lynette,
I am in Fremont and had considered taking Bart. Google directions indicate it is only a 4 minute walk from the Bart station to the Paramount theatre. I too was concerned about walking to and from the Bart station at night. If you're taking Bart, could we meet at the Oakland Bart station this evening and walk over? and walk back, of course. Let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Eva

      Hi Eva,

Actually, the BART station (19th St station in Oakland) is less than 1 block from the Paramount Theatre. When you come out of the station, make sure you head towards Broadway/20th St exits. You will come out right next to the theatre!
      Hope that helps!

FYI for those of you taking BART in -- There is a Raiders game at the Coliseum this evening staring at 7:00 PM so the trains may be a bit crowded and a bit CRAZY with The Raider Nation out in full force. I work directly across from the stadium and I can see the cars already lined up for tailgaiting and it isn't even Noon yet!

Please don't let this discourage you from joining us tonight, I just wanted everyone to be aware that it may be loud and crowded on the trains. Looking forward to seeing you all there! :-D

I've done it plenty at night after the movie. The train is usually filled with people getting out from the movie and more.

Right in front of the theatre... I will be there by 630 and François will be there a little earlier. Look for either one of us and jump in line with us!
