Topic: The Future of Marriage

The topic of "The Future of Marriage" was selected and won the vote at our 2/5/2014 meeting in Concord. To help frame the topic, The member who proposed this topic asked the following questions: Will the institution of marriage exist in 100 years? Is the institution of marriage a social convention or do human beings, by their nature, need to create some form of marriage institution?

I'd like to thank the members of our meetup group who are helping me to co-organize this cafe in Concord.

All members are encouraged to RSVP. If you are unable to make it to Concord, but know others who are interested, please spread the word!

We decided at our 2/5 meeting to move to a different, quieter location. While there are some vending machines next to our new meeting room, there will not be other food available, so I encourage you to bring your own food and beverage to the meeting room. There are a number of restaurants nearby, as well as a Peets Coffee & Tea.

There is a public parking garage next to the Plaza Tower that offers free parking, and the garage should have ample parking at the time of our meeting.

Please make sure to RSVP only if you are able to attend since RSVPs are limited. If you RSVP, but need to change your plans, please make sure to come back to the meetup site to change your RSVP (at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting) to provide others with an opportunity to RSVP for this meetup.

One of the members who is co-organizing this group with me will greet you in the lobby of the building and will escort / direct you to our meeting room.

We look forward to seeing you!

What is marriage? The state expresses an interest in both parties having a contract in dividing up the goodies each possesses. The church expresses an interest in both parties taking care of each other till death do them part. Are children secondary? Where does love, or sex, fit it, except as the propaganda the state and the church espouse to persuade people to marry?

Why are women sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more interested in getting married than are men?

I don't think women are more interested. I certainly am not. That was the case in the past when we needed men to do things for us because society had no interest in women's rights, but I think marriage is evolving into something different as equality between the sexes increases. And, with the rise of gay marriage becoming the norm, marriage has to change with the evolving attitude towards human unions.
