Topic: Mind

"Mind" won the vote at our February 13 meeting. A way to frame the discussion is to look at the topic through the lens of the Philosophy of Mind. Here's an article on Wikipedia about this branch of philosophy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_mind

Here's an excerpt from the article's introduction:

"Philosophy of mind is a branch of philosophy that studies the nature of the mind, mental events, mental functions, mental properties, consciousness, and their relationship to the physical body, particularly the brain. The mind–body problem, i.e. the relationship of the mind to the body, is commonly seen as one key issues in philosophy of mind, although there are other issues concerning the nature of the mind that do not involve its relation to the physical body, such as how consciousness is possible and the nature of particular mental states."

All members are encouraged to RSVP, but please do so as soon as possible since spots fill up quickly.

If all spots have been taken, please put yourself on the waiting list.

We will meet on the second level of the Barnes & Noble store, to the right of the cafe counter area in the back of the store (but not in the cafe itself). You will see a circle of folding chairs (and possibly a folding table) if you walk up to the cafe counter and then look to your right to the back wall of the store.

Please make sure to RSVP only if you are able to attend since RSVPs are limited. If you RSVP, but need to change your plans, please make sure to come back to the meetup site to change your RSVP (at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting) to provide others with an opportunity to RSVP for this meetup.

I look forward to seeing you!

I think this is my favorite subject, we have yet to realize the strength and practical magic of the mind, for instance, Edgar Mitchell the Apollo 14 moon walker, whos mother was blind was cured by a friend of Edgar's Norbu Chen , it was a miracle ! right ? well the miracle reversed itself after his mother found out that Norbus religious faith was not in the realm of her own beliefs. Her mind decided being blind was better than some kind of acceptance. This is the subject I would have liked to see the conversation around, the power and strength of dogmatic or otherwise BELIEF. Unfortunately I cannot make it, for my mind believes I need to catch up on my work and house chores before engaging in a crazy Friday and all to short weekend. I was just inundated today, Thursday at 2pm for too many jobs on Friday. Sorry for the late notice.

Hi. I've been wanting to show up at Philosophy Café meeting for some time, and tonight I will be there.

After a life time of being interested in philosophical questions, and a lot of reading, I have come to see that many of those questions involve the use of words that have no crisp or universally agreed upon meeting. Chief among these, in my opinion, is "exist" and "real". Rephrasing philosophical issues to avoid these terms and their synonyms often leads to greater clarity. The first person truth that one can be certain of is that we are having experiences. So I'm interested in hearing what people think is added to "I'm having experiences" when we say "My mind is having experiences."

Man, this is going to be a humdinger of a conversation! (never typed humdinger before, so please excuse any spelling mistake!)

Just what the mind is, is truly mind boggling. (lol) We are aware that we have a conscious mind, and deduced that we have a subconscious mind. Our conscious mind does one and only one thing, oops, it does nothing. It IS one and only one thing, - it is aware. Our subconscious mind, we deduced, is the thing that does everything that we have in our conscious mind, and does a zillion things more as well. My question then is, that if everything that our conscious mind has in it comes from our subconscious mind, why is it that I have in my conscious mind the fact that I think I am consciously in control of my actions?
