Topic: Existence and Non-existence

"Existence and non-existence" won the vote at our 3/13 meeting. Examples of questions related to the topic could include, "What do we mean when we say that something exists?," "Why do we think that existence exists?," "Can we prove that existence exists or is it more a matter of belief / faith that it exists?"

All members are encouraged to RSVP, but please do so as soon as possible since spots fill up quickly.

If all spots have been taken, please put yourself on the waiting list.

We will meet on the second level of the Barnes & Noble store, to the right of the cafe counter area in the back of the store (but not in the cafe itself). You will see a circle of folding chairs (and possibly a folding table) if you walk up to the cafe counter and then look to your right to the back wall of the store.

Please make sure to RSVP only if you are able to attend since RSVPs are limited. If you RSVP, but need to change your plans, please make sure to come back to the meetup site to change your RSVP (at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting) to provide others with an opportunity to RSVP for this meetup.

I look forward to seeing you!

I thought it would be mundane and overly abstract, but it fostered lively discourse and even passion.

Yea. I am so happy to be in. See you all tonight. To repeat, what I'd like to know is not so much what people believes exist, but rather what test or criteria people think a thing has to meet in order for them to say it exists. Does Superman exist? Does Superman's cape exist? Is the sentence "Superman's cape is red" a true sentence and "Superman's cape is blue" a false sentence. How can something that doesn't exist have some things about it be true and others false.

I'm so sorry to again have to cancel. Work is all consuming right now, but hopefully things will settle down in a couple of weeks. I know everyone who is able to attend will enjoy discussing this topic.

Hi Elizabeth...it looks like another member took the open spot. It's possible another spot will open up today or tomorrow...but they go fast, so keep a close eye out. Thanks!

Who in this case is sitting on low stools and who is using bull horns?

This discussion re Philosophy supply & demand issues can easily be resolved by thinking INSIDE the capitalist box that we all currently inhabit. It is well known (per Fox News) that lines were invented by Communists or Catholic nuns — take your pick. Rich people do not wait in lines — they hire the unemployed as stand-ins.

The obvious solution to allocating the scarce resource of philosophical chit-chat is for Lawrence to form a Philosophy Futures Market. Seats at the table could be auctioned off to the highest bidders in Bit coins. There would be 2 classes of seats: First Class and Steerage (since Middle Class is being abolished).
First Class seats would be high-backed, leather swivel chairs with built-in ear phones to permit tuning out contrary opinions. Steerage would be low stools that reduce their occupant's chin to the table top to make it easier to ignore their whiny drivel about Justice or democracy. Bull horns could be rented to shout out the opinions of vested interests.

Although opportunistic and thinking out of the box, to avoid manipulation of the playing field maybe we should consider having this topic twice. Seven people want in which would give a few people a chance to follow up in the following session and or a vacation. This could also be fodder for a new topic which I'm sure it will be. Food for thought...

Someone who couldn't make it was kind enough to let me know via email they had cancelled their RSVP. Alas, someone else grabbed the spot before I saw the message. If someone else wants to give me a spot, I suggest you call or txt me at[masked] so I can be logged on when you cancel and the spot becomes open. \

And if I don't get in, I hope you enjoy the topic.

I don't think that this is set up so that someone who has a spot can "give" their spot to someone else. It is really pretty much whoever manages to notice there is a spot and gets on it first. Seems to be fair to continue this way. So, just keep your eyes out, and get on your computer as soon as you get notified that there is a spot open. Or if you can get someone to call or text you, as you suggested, good for you, I guess!

Thanks Lu, that is very kind of you. Lawrence, does Lu's giving me her seat officially mean I can attend?

Hi Harris...I encourage you to add yourself to the "notify-me" list. I send a reminder to those on the RSVP list, several days before meetings; more times than not, I notice that a spot or two will open up closer to the meeting date. I do appreciate you asking, but to be fair to other members, I can't open up a new spot and give it to you directly.

Hmm, looks like I waited to long to RSVP. I suggested this topic; what I had in mind was a discussion of what people mean when they used the word "exist".

What I'm interested in is getting people to think about the criteria for a thing existing or not existing. Thinking that the ONLY valid criteria is that the thing can be detected by human senses augmented by scientific instruments is essentially the definition of being a scientific materialist. As I argued at the Mind discussion, the existence of subjective experience can not meet that criteria, which is why I'm not quite a scientific materialist.

If you believe God, angels, spiritual energy or the healing power of precious stones exist, can you help us understand how you distinguish between things that exist and those that do not?

By the way, if you no anything about set theory, do you think the Empty Set exists? In some ways it is the basis of all mathematics. I'd really like to attend this session.
