I like the recommendations for socializing and sharing ideas. I especially like the idea about sharing our photos, discussing and getting constructive criticism.

I'll throw in my $0.02 about the Meetup, and then a suggestion.

    1) I back up Versie 100%.
    2) Yes, there was much confusion about the meeting location.
    3) Photography is not a particularly social activity. I think this can be a bit off-putting to anyone attending these events for the first time.

My suggestion: include a social event before (and possibly after) the actual shoot where we can sit over a double cheeseburger or a tofu salad and discuss photo techniques, show off our favorite pics, meet new people, and better-coordinate any last minute details of the actual shoot. The important social aspect of the Meetup can get lost once we're out dispersed on a dark island shooting away.

Oh... don't worry, but I appreciate it, Versie. I did have a lot of fun, but it's not the same without you at the meetup. :)

I am still confused about the Meetup location. I got there late after an hour and a half in city traffic. The Google satellite map showed that Treasure Island Winery on 9th street was near the middle of the island. Tried to drive there but the was blocked. I parked and walked. When I got to the Google location the sign said Treasure Island Winery but no one was there. I tried to see the bridge but everything was fenced off. Security guards ran me off at one point. I finally found a shoreline location with a reasonable view. Got some shots. Nothing special. Twilight golden hour was long gone by then. I obviously went to the wrong Treasure Island Winery location on 9th street but that's what the Google map showed. Must be two Treasure Island Winery buildings on the island and Google showed only one, the wrong one. So where was I supposed to go? A map showing the location, parking and shooting areas sure would have helped a lot!

    • Versie A.

Oops I hit return to soon. I am making some minor changes that I mentioned in email earlier this morning. One of them is to include a map whenever possible. I don't get hung up on legalities, like I mentioned before I just want to have fun with my friends that share the same love for photography. I am planning something for October as we speak. Let me know if you have any ideas.

      September 30, 2013

  • Karen S.

I'm secretly (not) praying (well... I don't pray) that the date is not Oct 19th or 26th (that's Halloween Saturday). I'm sure it's too soon for this Saturday or the 12th? :) Don't plan around me, of course... Just am jazzed about going again with the whole group.

I feel the need to put in my two cents here.

There seem to have been a few attacks on Versie here, and I feel that's totally uncalled for. These events are arranged for your benefit, not his. He is kind enough to set them up for everyone. If you feel that the meetups should be run in a different way, you are more than free to start your own meetup group, and run those events any way you feel they should be run.
People have asked when we were going to have another meetup, and Versie acted on that. He set up this meet, even though he was unable to attend. Again, proof that his intent was for the good of the group, and NOT his own benefit.
We are all adults here. It's nice to have someone to at least point out the benefits of shooting in a certain location, but in this instance in particular, I think the subject was clear, as were the locations.

    Part 1

    4 · September 29, 2013

    • Alan R.

Part 2. Some of you may not realize this, but it actually costs money to run a Meetup group. I haven't seen Versie ask for any money for any of these, so it's apparent that he's footing the bill.

If you prefer to shoot in groups, by all means, set it up so you can carpool with folks, and hang together. But don't hang Versie out to dry just because it wasn't your idea of a perfect meetup.

One more note. When I go out shooting night photography, the last thing I want, is light pollution ruining my shots.

Versie, thank you with all sincerity, for setting up and maintaining this group.

FWIW, I did stop by even though I said I wasn't going to be able to. I have a VERY understanding wife. :D

I wanted to defend Versie since every meetup I've been to has been to has been a good experience, but now it appears Deepa has left the group, "A former member" has replaced her name. That is too bad because I wanted to go off on a topic tangent and have her explain the paragraph she wrote "And as far as legal is concerned...if they kill someone on the way home, you are just as liable..."

    September 30, 2013

    • Versie A.

Thanks Mike, It really bothered me when she dropped the legal statements. Everyone should enjoy themselves without having to worry about a member coming after them in or out of court. In any case she decided to leave the group.

      September 30, 2013

  • Paul G.

I am not sure Deepa is accurately summarizing the law of liability in this situation and hope Versie will stay on. But, having been exposed to cultures and situations in which women could never count on being safe, I consider it a fundamental, essential civil right for all women to be safe in public. Safety is no small matter but not unaddressable. For example, maybe at the start of a meetup we should see who would like to stay in a team or group for the evening and let that group move on in unison. Those who want to be lone rangers would be welcome to go solo as well. If we had something simple like a name tag, patch, or baseball cap we could just look out for one another. I think Treasure Island is actually a very safe place but there may be other places we would like to photograph at night when we would be safe only because of our numbers.

    September 29, 2013

    • torroid

I would suggest that if anyone isn't comfortable going on their own, they arrange ahead of time to meet with someone, or even travel together. Given some long travel times, unpredictable traffic, and life intrusions, it won't just magically happen.

      September 29, 2013

    • Versie A.

Hi Paul, Yes I am staying on and already planning something for October. Looks like Deepa decided to leave the group.

      September 30, 2013

  • Ileana

I just read all the comments. I can only speak for myself. I have attended a few of these photography meetups alone, and I have always felt safe. I like the idea of a “group” but only to meet other people that love photography. When I’m shooting, I want my space to photograph whatever vintage point I want. Last night, I wonder around by myself, and met a few members as I was looking for the perfect spot. Everyone was friendly, as always. I joined an adult photography meetup, and I do not feel Versie is responsible for me if something were to happen. Last night there were hundreds of people in Treasure Island. There were a couple of weddings going on, I saw three police cars within walking distance... I like Paul's idea. We should come up with some kind of nametag to identify us. I could just tell who was in our group, by all the tripods :-)

Versie, keep up the good work.

Yes, I admit I was a harsh. But, this is the second time I was there alone. As Carol mentioned, if I wanted to go shooting alone, I would not join a group. I was quiet angry last night. I am not comfortable being in areas that I am not familiar with, specially in the dark. Versie was there at the last meetup, but scenario was the same. Versie, I did not mean to be harsh, I just want you to understand how I feel from a single woman's perspective. And as far as legal is concerned, people come to your house to party voluntarily, but if they kill someone on the way home, you are just as liable. It is the same for these events. All I am trying to say, is please communicate if you can't make it and please provide a phone number.

    September 29, 2013

    • torroid

I agree with Andrea, Mohammad, and Karen. The idea that the organizer is anything more than an organizer is unreasonable. And although we all know these legal issues exist, bringing them up here in what reads to me like a threatening matter was bad form.

Deepa I get what you mean that in some ways it wasn't really a group just a lot of individuals together which will suit some tastes and not others. And so I guess it's up to you whether that is what you are looking for in a meetup. In the end this is being organised for people who want to be there and is such voluntary and optional. I also would quite like more community from a meetup so may not go again, on the other hand it was good motivation to get up and go out with my camera so I'm still glad I did it. However if you ended up deciding you wanted to do something more community based I'm open for discussing meeting up some time so there's at least the 2 of us (but I'm not taking responsibility for your safety)

      September 29, 2013

  • Mohammad A.

I appreciate this group and I hope we continue having fun. A suggestion to take care of some of the concerns would be for Versie to choose a secondary leader for each event. This would build a redundancy to the system and in case something unexpected comes up for Versie, the secondary leader would provide a single point of contact. This would also relieve Versie from having to deal with concerns remotely, which may not be possible. To be clear, I do not mean a permanent secondary leader; this would be someone “deputized” for one event who is preferably familiar with the area.

Meet location was a little confused for a while, but things worked out. Traffic from the peninsula was a disaster which delayed folks, but that's outside our control. The evening was clear and still, which was great.

    September 29, 2013

  • Ira S.

Thanks, all - I look forward to joining you in future adventures.

Some suggestions - particularly for night photography. I really love it, but also like to know I've got someone's back, and they have mine.

Pick a meeting place which ideally is has good parking, is well lit, and easy to find. Bonus points if it's near the starting point. Extra bonus points if it has food and a bathroom. When I went out with friends a few weeks ago, we met at a condo, and took a break at a Safeway on Potrero - so I'm thinking someplace like a Safeway or food place could be a good starting point.

Include a map. Indicate the first stop. We'll meet at X and start at Y

Have 1 or 2 contact people and cell phone numbers. It's easy to text map location to someone who doesn't know where you are. While we gathered at the Treasure Island Winery, once we left there, no one knew where we'd end up.

I don't know how to say this, so I am going to say what I feel. First of all it is extremely dishartening and disappointing that the group owner and host is no whare to be found.

This was my second meetup and once again everyone dispersed and I was left alone. Thank god for Carol. She and I hung out together and took some pictures. Versie, I worked with lawyers for five years. I dont know if you are aware that as a group owner, and host of an event, you are accountable and liable if anything happens to any of your attendees. I am not comortable that twice now I was left alone to my own devices.

As much as I love to learn to be a photographer, I am not comfortable going out with a group where the event host is not responsible. In the future, please make sure that as an event host, you show up, keep the group cohesive and make sure that no one is left alone. Sorry for such a bad review, but it is extemely hard when we are left on our own in the dark at night.

    September 28, 2013

    • Mohammad A.

I don't think that Versie is responsible for everything as you mentioned. This is a meet up group and no one is required to attend. I understand if someone knowingly puts others in an unsafe situation, they would be liable, but last night's situation was far from unsafe. I have been to other events that Versie has organized and he has gone above and beyond to make sure everyone is safe and feels welcome. Organizing events, finding interesting places and dealing with people's questions etc., is time consuming and in the case of this group its only rewards are socializing and learning. This does not mean that we would not suggest things for improvements or new things to do. I appreciate what Versie does and hope he keeps doing it.

      2 · September 29, 2013

    • Karen S.

I agree with all that Mohammed expressed. Versie has been an amazing and wonderful leader and warm person, and it shows in the number of people who regularly attend and number this meetup draws. I was just getting back into night photography when I started coming to this meetup last year and felt an immediate connection to the group, even in the soggy weather of the rainy night in Chinatown. I missed him last night! I hope to make the next one. :)

      1 · September 29, 2013

  • Carol S.

I read the email from Versie this morning and thank you very much for sending it. Things come up in our lives all the time, which is how it goes. Communication is key. I think if people knew what was going on it would have helped the situation. Hopefully, a lesson learned for all. And regarding the comment about stepping down as a host to events - only do so if that is your desire. I don't believe anyone is asking you to.

Lastly, I LOVE night photography. One of the reasons I sign up with meet-ups and not do these things on my own is so I am not alone. As a single woman I believe there is safety in numbers. I was surprised that everyone went their own way so quickly.

All in all I got a few nice shots and felt I made a new friend in photographing with Deepa. Hope to see you all at future events.

    September 26, 2013

    • torroid

AJ, If you took pictures "from there", did you really mean Treasure Island Wines, which is kind of in the middle of the island and the views are blocked, or did you mean The Winery SF, which is on the southern tip of the island and has visibility from there?

      September 27, 2013

    • AJ

Well the winery is the spot to meet with ample parking. Then you have 2 locations to take pics. One is next to the bay looking at the SF skyline and if you go on to the other side you can snap the new span with the harbor at TI

When exiting and re-entering the bridge, proceed with great caution. The route is very twisty, has several temporary barriers, and when get back on the bridge requires careful awareness of oncoming traffic and then quick acceleration.

I rode my bike out to the end of the new bridge path today. Note that (1) the path is closed between sunset and sunrise; (2) it currently stops just short of Yerba Buena Island, because the old bridge is in the way; (3) it's about 4 miles from the start in Emeryville to the end of the path. There are great views and photo opportunities from the end of the path, but for now only available in the daytime. So it looks like we'll have to go to YBI/TI.

As far as using Treasure Island goes, I've taken pictures of the west span from the western waterfront and that works well because that's parkland or open space or something; i.e. accessible. The eastern side of the island looks like a road, and maybe Pier 1 on the south east is accessible, but I've not tried it.

    September 19, 2013

Someone should check this out. But I believe there is very little walking from Treasure Island. Essential one side of the island to the other and this could be done in a car.
