Hey all, I've just discovered that I have an extra Manfrotto tripod bag (just like mine) in my trunk. Is there a chance I accidentally picked it up at the Middle Harbor outing? Does this belong to anyone here? If so, I'll make arrangements to get it back to you ASAP!

    HI Everyone,

Just wanted to say thank you for coming out yesterday evening. We truly have some very talented photographers in our group as evidenced from the photos posted from the Middle Harbor Shoreline Park meet up. I got some great tips on post editing from Jean and Susan and also some great suggestions for our next meet up.

    Another great event
Have you thought about shooting from Fort Baker and north of the Golden Gate? It's a place I would love to

    2 · January 20, 2013

    • Irene B.

I have shot from there - it is great

      January 20, 2013

    • Jerome

I've shot from Ft. Baker..Another spot would be Battery Godfrey..Gives you views of the Marin Headlands and the Bridge from the west side, then you can take the trail, go under the Bridge and get some views of the Bridge looking north...This is also closer to the bridge than from Baker Beach...Shot there about two weeks ago....

It was great being close to the water. The reflections from the city, bridge, and harbor are spectacular. The setting sunset sky was awesome. Thanks to God for the beautiful sunset and warmer weather and thanks to Versie for offering up this location.

It was excellent! The light at sunset was incredible. Sorry I only saw a couple of you but I arrived about an hour and a half early and knew exactly where I wanted to shoot. See ya next time :)

Where should we meet in the park? There are three parking areas

    January 19, 2013

  • Versie A.

I will have a battery operated lantern style portable light with me and of course my flashlight

    January 19, 2013

  • Versie A.

I always have 3 spare batteries. From what I hear the light will be minimal so a lot of manual focusing will be needed.

    January 19, 2013

  • Suzanne G. C.

Don't forget to charge all your batteries, long exposures really drain them quickly. I'm bringing a chair and a little plastic table.
Be aware of your neighboring photographer... the light from flash lights will be picked up during long exposures. Red lights will not effect long exposures. They can be purchased at Walmart in the camping section for a couple of dollars. You may find an app on your phone for a red light.

    January 19, 2013

    • Deborah

Suzanne, thanks for the tips re:batteries and headlamps. Regarding the red light, I have a different point of view. Red light can effect your exposures in an unwelcoming way. It can and often does put a red glow around your foreground, and subject if it's in the light path. It's not always welcome. I've got too many exposures with the red glow of a headlamp in them that I didn't want. Red light/headlamps at night protect your night vision so you can see to set up, make setting changes, or follow a path without having to turn on a bright white light and be blinded when you turn it off. We need to be mindful of others around us when we're using our red headlamps too.
I've forgotten to turn mine off on several occasions. Blech!!

      January 19, 2013

    • Deborah

      P.S.
Focusing at night-If you have LiveView using it can help with focusing challenges at night. Using a bright flash light to light up something in the distance to focus on can help, and pre-calculating your lens to know where it focus' at infinity is something we should know about each lens we own. Hopefully there will be enough lights around the port that focusing isn't too much of an issue this evening. I'm planning to get there early too. Hope to see you!

So, what are we practicing tonight; HDR, panos, light-painting, capturing beautiful twilight shots like your feature photo for this meetup? I really love night photography. The only thing I do not like about it is the fact that auto focus will not work in the dark. My eye sight is not the best; so consequently, sharp pin-pointing manual focus is difficult for me. Still...I love the challenge. See you all there.
Did you know that Lightroom 4 has the capability to tether to a camera? I learned this last weekend and practiced it yesterday. It's very cool. I may bring my laptop just so I can see larger size images. This "should" help me overcome my sight handicap.

Can any one give me a ride there. I come from the Walnut Creek , but i can meet at any Bart station that's close to the park. Thanks.

    January 18, 2013

    • Versie A.

I still did not hear from the Port, however I think we will be OK tomorrow. think the Port Coordinator was too busy to send me the form for me to sign. Let just show up at around 5:00pm or before

      January 18, 2013

    • Versie A.

Guomin, I live in San Lorenzo, sorry

      January 18, 2013

  • Deborah

The map link still isn't going to Portview Park. Versie would you mind clarifying for me where you're meeting everyone? Is it in Portview Park, or Middle Harbor Park? According to the directions on the park's site they're not at the same place. Thank you! I'm looking forward to it. I've been wanting to shoot this venue at twilight for a long time.

      January 18, 2013

I'm gong to get there a little earlier in the day. I'd like to get some daytime and sunset shots of the Port of Oakland.
I'll look for everyone at the meetup location & time @ 5. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. Some folks..."William" I already know!

    January 10, 2013

    • Versie A.

Suzanne and Jerome, I always arrive early so I will see you there early next Saturday

      January 10, 2013

    • Suzanne G. C.

Cool. I will be watching for both of you and Jerome too.

      January 11, 2013

  • Suzanne G. C.

    Versie,
The Portview Park map is not going to the park. I've had this same issue with my meetup site.
I love night time photography, but I'm going to wait to RSVP until you confirm that we can stay there after sunset.
Thanks for all your efforts in making this meetup a success!

    January 8, 2013

    • Ron H

I am sorry for confusion. I never said someone cannot stay after sunset. My concern was only if you arrived at 5 or a little later you may not get into the parking lot and I do not remember any street parking allowed. I and others I know have stayed after dark for photography and I have not heard of problems. But anything is possible.

      January 8, 2013

    • Versie A.

No worries Ron, its all sorted out now

      January 10, 2013

  • Jerome

Good idea, Suzanne...I think I'll do the same...

    January 10, 2013

  • Karen S.

Bummer. I can't make it next Saturday... Nephew's bar mitzvah.

    January 10, 2013

    • Versie A.

Sorry to see you cant make it. Bar Mitzvah sounds like fun!

      January 10, 2013

  • Suzanne G. C.

Ron...thanks for the clarification, I didn't read your first post very carefully.

    January 9, 2013

  • Versie A.

I am checking with Port View park to make sure that we will be allowed there after 5pm. Ron suggested that I check to confirm this info.

    January 7, 2013

  • Ron H

They may (used to?) lock the entrance gate at sunset? which is about 5pm. Exit (with one-way spikes) remains open.

    January 6, 2013

    • Versie A.

Thanks Ron I will check it out tomorrow after work and let the group know.
