September Meetup

This month, we will be reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

Overview

Middlesex is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Jeffrey Eugenides published in 2002. Its characters and events are loosely based on aspects of Eugenides' life and observations of his Greek heritage. It is not an autobiography; unlike the protagonist, Eugenides is not intersex. The author decided to write Middlesex after he read the 1980 memoir Herculine Barbin and was unsatisfied with its discussion of intersex anatomy and emotions.

Narrator and protagonist Cal Stephanides (initially called "Callie") is a hermaphrodite man of Greek descent with a condition known as 5-alpha-reductase deficiency, which causes him to have certain feminine traits. The first half of the novel is about Cal's family, and depicts his grandparents' migration from Smyrna, a city in Asia Minor, to the United States in 1922. It then follows their assimilation into American society. The latter half of the novel, set in the late 20th century, focuses on Cal's experiences in his hometown Detroit, Michigan, and his escape to San Francisco where he comes to terms with his modified gender identity.

Please join us for some good discussion and social time. Refreshments will be available. (Please feel free to bring a snack or beverage. I will supply at least one bottle of wine. )

There is never any pressure to have the book completed (or read at all) in order to attend. We would just love to have you, and it can be enjoyable to hear about the book and meet some cool people.

Remember that Books, Inc. provides book club members a 15% discount on the books we are reading for the meetup. Call ahead to make sure they have a copy available for you. They can also arrange to have books shipped to you.

Parking and transportation:

Parking can be challenging, but there are a number of options. There are the obvious street meters which are free at this time. In addition to these there are two outdoor lots and a parking garage in the vicinity, all of which are also free on Sundays. (Regularly $0.50/hr)

The Civic Center Parking Structure is next door to the Alameda Theatre and is located at 1416 Oak Street, between Central Avenue and Santa Clara Avenue. Lot A is accessible from Park Avenue between Central avenue and Santa Clara Avenue. Lot B is accessible from both Central Avenue and Alameda Avenue between Oak Street and Park Street.

The bookstore is also not too far from the Fruitvale BART Station on Oakland. It is an easy bus ride from there. Arrangements can also be made with the organizer and/or other members for rides to and from the BART. Just post requests and availability to the comments, or e-mail me through the web page links.

I hope the meeting went well. It was ironic that I was working in our school library, dealing with a lot of books, but unable to make it to a meetup to discuss a book. I'll be posting soon about the October book.

I will be in San Diego so I'll have to miss out on this one. :-( And I super love this book too - I own a copy and have read it at least 5 times.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
