Insignificant Others

by Stephen McCauley

From Booklist

Winter in Boston sets the mood for Richard Rossi's reflections. Once a psychologist, now working in HR for a high-tech company, he is often bemused by corporate nuances. His relationship with live-in lover Conrad has reached a level of mundane confusion, and the spice that “insignificant other” Benjamin provides now has less savor. What to do? Richard is an exercise junkie, performing two sessions a day, one in a sunny upscale gym, the other in a basementlike facility. The fact that Richard is on a quest for a more meaningful life is apparent to us, but not him, so he is astonished to find that his conversations at work and with friends and family have a new, more substantive feel and are having a greater effect than any of his therapy sessions. McCauley's turns of phrase give Richard's jaded, ironic, and terse observations a magnificently elitist snarkiness, and as amusing as the story is, readers will truly care about Richard's fate. --Danise Hoover

Please join us for some good discussion and social time. Refreshments will be available. (Please feel free to bring a snack or beverage. I will supply at least one bottle of wine. )

There is never any pressure to have the book completed (or read at all) in order to attend. We would just love to have you, and it can be enjoyable to hear about the book and meet some cool people.

Remember that Books, Inc. provides book club members a 15% discount on the books we are reading for the meetup. Call ahead to make sure they have a copy available for you. They can also arrange to have books shipped to you.

Parking and transportation:
Parking can be challenging, but there are a number of options. There are the obvious street meters which are free by this time. In addition to these there are two outdoor lots and a parking garage in the vicinity, all of which are also free on Sundays. (Regularly $0.50/hr)

The Civic Center Parking Structure is next door to the Alameda Theatre and is located at 1416 Oak Street, between Central Avenue and Santa Clara Avenue. Lot A is accessible from Park Avenue between Central avenue and Santa Clara Avenue. Lot B is accessible from both Central Avenue and Alameda Avenue between Oak Street and Park Street.

The bookstore is also not too far from the Fruitvale BART Station on Oakland. It is an easy bus ride from there. Arrangements can also be made with the organizer and/or other members for rides to and from the BART. Just post requests and availability to the comments.

Sky- how lovely to wake up to an email calling me greedy and comparing Dawn to the devil! Haha, gotta love it. Good thing Jamila is prepared to have your back at the next meeting. What would you do without us to feed you wine (next time) and give you advice?!

I'm now realizing my mistake in insulting you all while expecting to drink in safety next month. I take back all that I've typed up to this point. Now...where can I find one of those wine glasses that can hold an entire bottle?

Sky, Sky, Sky....I'm bringing a bottle with your name on it....a cork screw and a glass. I'll also help you bring the glass to your lips if you'd like. I don't know if I can wait another month, though! I think the devil is a brighter red than Dawn's hair....and you think we get there early for the book....WRONG...its the wine..just ask Dawn!!

Chocolate + Wine + animated book discussion + drinks afterward= pretty much the perfect evening.

I'm the victim here Elizabeth, I didn't get any wine because you, Dawn and Jamila are avaricious and you're trying to make it out like it's my fault.

Hey Sky: I had two glasses myself, but Elizabeth is right, you gotta get it while the getting is good. I will bring a bottle next time, too. We'll have 17 bottles left over and you'll get one entirely for yourself....yippee. Watch out for Dawn though.....

Is it pick on the redhead day? I strategically planned my seat. :) Next time we will save you a seat, Sky, and then there will be no worries. :)

I really shouldn't complain because I never bring anything but I do have to agree with Jamila. Dawn is especially untrustworthy because her hair is the same color as the devil.

That's the cool thing about the book club. I didn't quite hate it, but I really didn't appreciate it that much until hearing the back and forth discussion and diverse outlooks about it.

Did someone need a ride from the Hayward area? I am leaving at 4 and meeting a few other club members for a drink in Alameda right beforehand. I can give a ride, if needed please let me know.

If they are confused about that one, they're thinking quite a bit ahead. We're going to read it for the March meetup.

There was some confusion when the book order was placed, and a different book ended up being ordered. They were not able to acquire this one. I think that the wrong book was purchased by a few book club members, and I want to make sure everyone is reading the right book.
