Meet & Critique XXIII

On this day in history astronomer and mathematician Nicolas Copernicus was formally installed as a canon, the Atlantic telegraph cable was laid, and Sherlock Holmes's "Adventure of Dancing Men" began. If these events get your spirit soaring and your mind ticking - how *did* Copernicus manage that? - then you'll want to attend our meeting. You'll get to read, critique, and discuss new scifi and fantasy in a friendly setting. Please feed the red pens! Email submissions to Beth by 12:00 noon on Sunday, July 13, 2014. The author's fee is $5 per submission to help keep this website running. Thank you.

You can view your place in the critique queue HERE.

I really enjoyed this meeting. It was a chance to chat more informally. I did want to mention one thing though.

It was suggested that we might submit first draft material to the group. While the sentiment is appreciated, I'd like to discourage that for three reasons:
    1) The deeper elements: the story, emotional connection, and ideas are hard to get to with typical first draft typos and language flaws. You will get more out of the experience with your best foot forward.
    2) When people are devoting their time to non-published work, you want to value that and give them a chance to like it.
    3) Our group Sunday gave very gentle, constructive critiques (it's what I try to do). The group sometimes isn't that way. I don't mean to scare anyone, but it's good to know.

There are plenty of good forums for first draft work in writing groups. This is actually a good exercise for liberating one's inhibitions. Temescal Writers is one I've done.

It sounds like a good idea to distinguish the goal of the group, though I have always assumed it was a just location thing. Though I rarely attend due to distance, I'll share my two cents as an 'outsider'. The term 'incubator' might loose descriptive value; it makes me think of a brainstorming writing team in this context. Off-hand these alternatives come to me: 'Critique for the Novice' or 'Early Review' (sterile description), 'Sweet Critique' or 'Critique with Care' (more literary flavor, also more flexible to accommodate the more experienced who just prefer the location)

LOL! Again, a good insight. I like "Sweet Critique". It has a pink princess flavor, though. ;) And shouldn't all our critiques be sweet?

Beth, if I can still squeeze in, I'd like to!

Of course! The RSVP cutoff date is to make sending out readings more manageable and put a damper on the number of 11th hour emails. :) I'll happily send you the readings tonight.

Yikes, I had asked for the day off, but I ended up getting scheduled anyway. See you in August.

Thought I'd dip my toe in the critique group pool.

After nearly a year away, I might be able to start attending again...hopefully this meeting will be the one.
