Week-Day Hike in Horsethief Canyon

This was a popular event last time but most folks couldn't make it so we are trying this again on a week day.

Horsethief Canyon is about 3.3 miles long and located near Alpine.  There is a trail to a swimming hole and another trail which follows the Pine Creek stream bed with stands of oak and sycamore.  Both trails together take about three hours to complete.  The hike is moderate in difficulty with lots of level hiking on the canyon floor.

Bring lots of water, sunscreen etc...  The rattlesnakes are out. There are some wonderful stands of mature trees along the route--perfect for a lazy picnic next to the stream.  Excellent birding area.  We should see lots of native flowers so bring your camera.  There is poison oak on this hike so long pants are recommended for those who are sensitive and who want to do the creek bed trail.  The swimming hole trail has minimal poison oak.  Check the weather report and dress accordingly.

To view a trail map and download the route to your phone go to;

We'll meet at my house at 9am and carpool from there.  I'll email directions to those who RSVP.

    A friend and I did this hike on Saturday. We swam in the pool and I was surprised that it was ice cold considering the hot weather! We were also surprised to see a small bass in the pool. This is one of San Diego's great, relatively unknown hikes. Let's keep it that way!

    Turkeys, poison oak, squawbush, strange fish, cool weather and great trail mates — what's not to like?
