January - Where'd You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle—and people in general—has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence—creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

That was a good discussion, but I have some questions afterwards as well! What was the purpose of Elgin Branch's name? There was a reason for Fox and one for Bee but are we to take Elgin's name as Elgin marbles - stone cold - or is there a USA reference I haven't got?

Pushing the time back suits me better, means I can have tea without indigestion!

I am not sure I will be able to be there after all. I loved the book and look forward to chatting about it online after the meet. See you all next month.

Don't know about anyone else, but I've had to print off a map of Seattle to make sense of the first part :)

I haven't been since about April last year, but have read some of the books throughout the year. Am really looking forward to joining you again! Started the book a few days ago; how is everyone finding it?

Due to pick this up from the library tomorrow and looking forward to reading it through a dark and potentially wintry January (I hope it's actually not too wintry) and will enjoy meeting up to discuss it!
