====== History ======
Growing up in the danger filled warrens of Baldur's gate's lower city slums, Garad Ellerton quickly learnt that anyone in his position either lived life at the mercy of those stronger than yourself, or become one of the the predators. The death of his mother during what began as a common street brawl when he was 14 was all the impetus he needed, and his initiation into one of the innumerable street gangs quickly followed. Like most such gangs, this one was a front for a much more organised illegal guild, whose activities ran that gamut from local protection rackets to organised larceny, and it was the latter that Garad gravitated towards. Although many were bigger or stronger than Garad, none were as lightening quick and, as he grew, his mastery of the blade became a minor legend amongst the local street toughs and thugs.
His uncanny skill with the knife brought him to the notice of the power brokers of the underworld, and he found himself more and more being used as a guild enforcer, and oft times an assasin. Working with the senior hitmen of the guild, Garad learnt the art of the silent kill, as well as the skills needed to infiltrate a target's location and remain undetected. He performed a number of "terminations" for the guild, but he grew more and more jaded with his lot in life, and he began to realise that the status quo of his life couldn't remain the same.
In the end, it was the byzantine internal guild politics that drove Johan to leave the guild, weary of the perpetual infighting and (many times literal) backstabing. He initially considered the much safer course of leaving Baldur's gate and it's now vengful thieves guild, but eventually decided to stay and set himself up as something of a free agent. After over a decade immersed in the dark underbelly of the city's most lawless parts, Garad's perspective on things were quite streightforwrd but,since leaving, he's began to feel pangs of guilt over his past actions, and has started to go out of his way to help those stuck in the same situation he found himself in growing up. He's also made a point of helping the unofficial law enforcers of the Flaming Fist mercenary company (though not the official patrols of the City Watch, whom he still avoids ) and now has regular contacts with those in the mercanary company tasked with keeping peace in the city. Although he doesn't make a big point of it, he also sees this as a means of redressing some of the more base things he did for the guild, things he's come more and more to regret since leaving the very introverted and stratified guild.
Garad isn't overly outspoken or boisterous, but he doesn't lack in confidence, and much prefers to tackle a problem straight on, even if this is from the shadows. |His upbringing has left him with no qualms about killing, and of doing so by any means possible, but he makes a point now of tempering his his initial reaction to certain situations.
