Uke Club's JULY JAM in San Antonio

Saturday, July 6th @ Garage Mahal (Time: 1 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.) in beautiful historic Downtown San Antonio, Florida (near St. Leo University). The Garage Mahal, a converted garage, serves as a jamming place and concert venue for many local musicians. It is owned by Rochelle and Norman Morris, who are graciously letting the Uke Club use the venue. The Garage Mahal is located inside the fenced gate of the purple house located across from the city park in San Antonio. Since this is not a restaurant, it might be wise to bring your own beverage and snack, if desired.

There will be plenty of chairs. Bring your uke, music stand (if you have one), a book light, and a singing voice. We normally jam in unison so nobody feels self-conscious...This is for fun!

Also, please download music tabs (under "Files") for the specific date's jam and bring your "Jumpin' Jim's The Daily Ukulele Book" and the new "Leap Year Version" if you have it. The book can be purchased at any Sam Ash Music Store, Barnes & Noble, or online at Amazon.com.

Please Note: To defray the cost of using Garage Mahal and maintain our MeetUp website, a donation of $2 is suggested.

Just checked FedEx and my new six-string Uke should be in on Thursday!!! Guess I'd better learn to play by then! ;-)

You are definitely well on your way!

To Valerie's dismay, the new one is not arriving until Monday now. You may insert a sad face here

David and I got bold this morning and played our ukuleles in church!!!! It was very fun and we did a pretty job. We did three hymns and I also did the doxology and two originals for the offering and silent prayer time. I hooked mine up to a powered amp that we have and it sounded nice! I can't wait to learn more chords and techniques to add to the variety of sounds.
I think our jam session yesterday helped David and me to feel more confident, so thank you all for your help an welcoming demeanor.

I always enjoy it, but today there was exceptional energy there.

Hey, we had a great group today and the songs were super, but I hate it when I'm not prepared for class. (;^))
I'm gonna have to start earlier and spend more time prepping because prepping for my show on the Friday before takes a lot and I'm always running out of time.
Great to have David and Valerie in the group and to talk to you after. I'd like to see that Pineapple uke, I've never seen one in real life and up close.
Already looking forward to next month.

    July 6, 2013

    • David G.

Good to chat with you afterward too Jim. I would be happy to show off the Pineapple. It's a small uke with a huge sound.

Great singing and strumming, excellent bass playing, top notch washboarding, and perfect song choices. Lots of fun today.

A great enthusiastic bunch today! It was neat to have the bass and rhythm sections too....

Valerie & David, if your yellow Daily Ukulele doesn't arrive in time, you certainly may look on mine. You probably noticed that someone often posts copies of songs represented in the books. Many times we discover problems with the key or the arrangements.

hey hey hey... don't give away to many shoiulder sides! i'd be lost without our smile AND your books!

It appears as if Valerie and I will be there. We were able to rearrange things and have an opening in the crazy schedule. Now I have too go and limber up the fingers.

    July 4, 2013

  • Roy M.

I plan to be there and my wife Laura is going to give it a try. Thanks.

    July 4, 2013

  • Valerie G.

Hi, Gail! David and I are trying to clear our schedule so that we can be there on Saturday. Can NOT wait! We are having a blast with our ukes, and I just ordered a six string... We have the blue book, and the yellow book MAY come before the jam on Saturday. Looking forward to it!

    July 4, 2013

  • Gail R.

Wow!!! Valerie Gillespie and hubby. OMG, OMG, OMG! Valerie will tell you that I and my husband are huge fans. We are the couple who try to sit as close as possible to The Garden Jazz Night performances. David, do not worry about being a beginner. The uke is so user friendly. Our group is very nurturing and supportive.
And, yes, Dade City seems to be The Place to be.

    July 3, 2013

    • David G.

Hi Gail! Small world huh? Yes, Valerie and I are new uke owners. She is standing next to me joining the group right now.... Alas, soon I will just be that guy Valerie hangs around with.

      July 3, 2013

    • Gail R.

I appreciate how filled one's calendar can be, but hope to see you both at our Uke meet soon -- August if not this month.

      July 3, 2013

  • David G.

Hi guys! My wife and I each picked up Ukuleles while we were in Hawaii last month and are having a blast learning to play. I am a real beginner whereas she is the musician in the family... Hope to be able to meet the group one day soon. We live in Dade City so this is a perfect location.

    1 · July 3, 2013

    • David G.

Hi Jim, Valerie and I have some other plans we are trying to rearrange. If we manage to do it, we will be there. I hope you guys can handle a REAL beginner

      1 · July 3, 2013

    • Jim S.

David, ... all levels. I'm not much more than a beginner myself. Hope you can make it Sat.

      July 3, 2013

  • Jim S.

I agree with Candace. I know it's not the same but at the Old Time Jam at GarageMahal, we have a list of around 450 tunes. Some we play frequently and are very HOT on .... some we don't play often and are not so hot on. But we need to play songs often enough that they are in our repertoire, not totally new every time we dig them up.

    July 3, 2013

  • Gail R.

Re C & J's discussion: There can be a Happy Medium: Trying new songs is desirable and stimulating. However, it would be nice if we had a repertoire of a few songs the group really polished. (Not necessarily ultra simple 3 chord warm up tunes.) I'm thinking of an East Pasco-Hernando (SanAntones?) club representation at Open Mic night at the Ukulele Getaway. I'll be game for Rattle Snake Fest should be be invited again . . .

We have been doing that at our Jams for as few months as well...
We usually have 4 songs and we start the next Jam with “Last Months"... Then 4 new ones... and so on...
      Looking forward to seeing everyone..
Should I bring my new UBass?

      July 2, 2013

    • Chyrisse

Bring whatever you want! Except a guitar...hehe

      July 2, 2013

  • Jim S.

Michael, hope you didn't get your taco down the block at Pancho's Villa. Never had a bad one there.

By all means the songs with problems should be removed ... only the good ones stay. Less clutter that way.

    July 2, 2013

    • Michael K.

generic TACo term - but now i REALLY wanna try one!

      July 2, 2013

We used to sing "This Land is Your Land" on a regular basis. It's easy and familiar...but I was getting real bored last year doing the same songs every month (e.g., Folsom Prison, Jambalaya). I'm glad when somebody introduces something new. A few suggestions for next month, people?

    June 3, 2013

    • Jim S.

Hey Chyrisse, how can ya get bored singing a song once a month ????

      June 30, 2013

    • Chyrisse

I guess with 1,000's of songs I hate doing the same song list. Maybe I have ADD? I like unpredictability and my favorite part of the jam is when somebody introduces a song I never thought to play on the uke.

well the 3 files are done.... sorry it took a little longer than i thought having to do it with just one hand, they look great on the website, but the colours are a little weak when printed on white paper. oh well. you can get them on the website or download them from the FILES section. let me know if there are any major issues with them and i'll fix them. BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO - SHE'LL BE COMING AROUND THE MOUNTAIN - TINY BUBBLES

    June 11, 2013

    • Chyrisse

I might be a good idea to delete versions of songs that have issues. People might get confused. Let's keep the "good ones" on the site.

      June 13, 2013

    • Michael K.

i've been using the REPLACE option to keep only the latest and gretest - not to mention MEETUP ***WILL NOT*** allow you to have multiple files with the same name

Candace, thanks! I had the same problem. I appreciate Mike's contribution, but singing in the round is moot -- or in this case, mute--if copies are too light to read.

    June 12, 2013

  • Michael K.

1st: sorry for the quick exit on saturday... bad taco at lunch. with that out of the way, i'll be working on 2 songs for next month. each song will require different levels of singing by different folks; ie: all girls sing, then all boys (in DAISY DAISY) and 1/2 the room singing the refrain while the other half sing the chorus (in OH SUZANNA) both are available on my website mikee.9wide.com\music, click UKE and you'll find the basic songs there so you can begin practicing... i'll have colour coded version be the end of the weekend.

    June 4, 2013

    • Chyrisse

Yeah, I figured you went AWOL on us! Hope you are feeling better :) You want us to sing a round next month? Pls. post the full html for the link and details. I'm making the song list for next month now.
