Uke Club's October Jam in Zephyrhills

Saturday, October 5th @ The Commons on Pretty Pond (Time: 1 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at a beautiful retirement community in Zephyrhills, Florida. We will be having our meeting in the Bistro area. Please enter through the front door.

There will be plenty of chairs. Bring your uke, music stand (if you have one), and a singing voice. We normally jam in unison so nobody feels self-conscious...This is for fun! We are not pros!

Also, please download music tabs (under "Files") for the specific date's jam and bring your "Jumpin' Jim's The Daily Ukulele Book" and the new "Leap Year Version" if you have it. The book can be purchased at any Sam Ash Music Store, Barnes & Noble, or online at Amazon.com.

To defray the cost of the website, a $1 donation is suggested.

I don't have a ukelele yet, but I'd like to attend and maybe get some advice on buying. I can't say I sing well, but I'll do my best.

The fluidity of our membership is certainly a concern, so perhaps we can achieve a compromise: at least start with a couple of songs that we do regularly, every meeting with the goal of polishing them. I know there are a number of snowbirds who are also song birds and who add great harmony. Let's keep an ear out for songs that "click" with the group, not just ones that are personal favorites, but elicit a Hey, that was good!

To perform we need everybody....I mean EVERYBODY to sing. The ukulele is the support for the singing. We had a pretty good repertoire last year. "Under the Boardwalk" always goes over well...

Hi Chyrisse, I agree totally with your thoughts on the group and even though I am I of the snow birds I would welcome more practice nights and the idea of performing.

Last year we had a couple of opportunities to play. I remember they were looking for performers for an environmental festival in New Port Richey and only two people wanted to play. I know you've always been enthusiastic and open to playing out. How do the rest of you feel?

Also, if anybody would like to host a uke jam, please let me know and I'll put the event on the website. When the club was first started I hosted events at my house (uke jams, movie night). Some of you might have a clubhouse where you live. Just a suggestion....

When people are watching us, we are just practicing. Maybe we could select a couple songs we do well, learn them very well, and have a little concert at the end of our Jam

Last October a core group of members learned about five songs and performed at the Rattlesnake Festival in San Antonio. It took practice! Time! Commitment! We got together more than once per month. Since then we have had a revolving door (our numbers will swell come Fall when the Snowbirds arrive). Some people are complete beginners, some are seasoned players, some sing, some don't..We really need STRONG singing to perform. Again, the issue is commitment because we play for fun once per month and are not a "performing" group. If there was a serious interest, we could evolve into more....

October will be the first meeting I will not attend since the club's inception because -- OK, now I am bragging! -- I will be in Spain.

You've been there supporting the club from the get-go. You have a legitimate excuse for not attending on the 5th!

Any favorite songs? I just tried out "California Dreamin'" in the Yellow Book. It actually sounds pretty good. I think we ought to do "Baby Tree" again.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
