Uke Club's FEBRUARY JAM in San Antonio

  • February 2, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • "Garage Mahal"

Saturday, February 2nd @ Garage Mahal (Time: 1 p.m. to 2:30/3:00 p.m.) in beautiful historic Downtown San Antonio, Florida (near St. Leo University). The Garage Mahal, a converted garage, serves as a jamming place and concert venue for many local musicians. It is owned by Rochelle and Norman Morris, who are graciously letting the Uke Club use the venue.  The Garage Mahal is located inside the fenced gate of the purple house located across from the city park in San Antonio. Since this is not a restaurant, it might be wise to bring your own beverage and snack, if desired.

There will be plenty of chairs. Bring your uke, music stand (if you have one), and a singing voice. We can jam in unison so nobody feels self-conscious...This is for fun!

Also, please download music tabs (under "Files") for the specific date's jam and bring your "Jumpin' Jim's The Daily Ukulele Book" and the new "Leap Year Version" if you have it.  The book can be purchased at any Sam Ash Music Store, Barnes & Noble, or online at Amazon.com.

Please Note: To defray the cost of using Garage Mahal and maintain our MeetUp website, a donation of $2 is suggested.

Did anyone make a list of the 'impromptu' songs we did? Some of them were a lot of fun, but I didn't write down the titles, then I had to rush off because my dh was waiting in the park (with my dogs).

Thanks! "Can't Help But Smile", that's one that I was trying to remember! It was about ukuleles and I thought it was really cute. I didn't realize the impromptu songs were such a big part of the meeting. I'll bring my Daily Ukulele next time, and I just ordered the Leap Year version.

I have had the earworm going w/"Can't Help But Smile" in my head all weekend! Yeah, we started to do the "take turns/circle/song choosing" a few months ago. Each person gets to lead a song..but he/she must know how to sing it and not just "like" it! I am in LOVE with my Sideways Eight ukulele that Andy made. It was for a special birthday. Here's his website: http://gibsonwoodwork...

One thing I have learned, whatever 'hobby' I'm pursuing, is that getting together with others is a great opportunity to learn more about whatever interests you. I learned a few neat tricks at this meeting, thanks to all of you who shared tips. I wish I had been able to stay longer and have a chance to talk to a few more people. And oh, my, I can't stop thinking about Andrew's beautiful handmade ukuleles!

Thanks for sharing your practice sheets Gail. I´ve been scanning my book and printing out the songs for my husband to use- they often
don´t look the best. Yours will work out great!

I haven't made it to a meetup yet, but I practice the songs just in case. Sometimes I make a practice sheet to work from, so I uploaded my practice sheets from The Daily Ukulele songs in case anyone else might be interested. Some of the songs had already been uploaded, so I didn't duplicate those. Hope there are no errors, but let me know if there are!

Oops, I just discovered I left out an [A7] in verse 3 of "Dream a Little Dream of Me", so I uploaded a corrected file today.

Does anyone know, are dogs allowed in the nearby park? My husband would like to drive down with me and take the dogs to the park while I attend the meetup. It's 70 miles from where I love so it would be nice to have him drive down with me.

PS In San Ann there is family owned Pancho's Villa Chinese --just kidding! Mexican -- restaurant, and the San Ann Market not only is a good convenience store for locals, there is a splendid deli and gourmet coffee bar. Not certain, things change, but I think it also has hot items s well. Take home or enjoy at bistro tables. Nice for a post-meet late lunch, early dinner. I love living in this area!

what kind of shops and things are there in San Antonio. I would like to come but my wife would prefer to pots around if there were neat little stores....but I can't find much info. It's about an 80 minute drive for us.

I know there is at least one antique & "interesting stuff" shop across the park. Neighboring Dade City (6 miles?) is a destination town of countless charming shops, tea rooms, small restaurants. . .
