Thank you for the kind words Melissa.
Anyway I have read the posts to my border collie to get her opinion. She was unable to give any healing words. However she did say that she thought we might want to change the name of our group if this debate rages further to
THE EAST TENNESSEE UNSOCIAL MEET UP GROUP
You know religion is a sensitive topic for so many. How many wars have been waged as a result not of G_D but instead man's intolerance and misinterpretation?
So many are so impassioned by this subject. Believers and non believers.
So I think Sherry you can learn from Cheryl. Cheryl you can learn from Sherry.
Sherry many men and women have died for your right to sign your name any way you wish. To express your beliefs in how you see fit. Yet despite tha,t yelling fire in a crowded theatre is a felony. You have not done that at all or even approached that limit in my opinion. Yet for Cheryl it felt as if you did and it just felt wrong to her. I would say we all expect clear boundaries with regards to separation of church and state. However this is neither a church or state but instead a social site.
We are from Arizona and we chose East Tennessee to live about four years ago. We travelled for two years in a trailer and went 55,000 miles, to every state and fell in love with this area. The lands and the people. Yet it is different from much of the rest of the country. So I go into my attorneys office and the sign reads as you enter JESUS IS LORD. Many of the doctors i go to have a crucifix in the exam rooms. I know this is normal for you but from someone from other parts of the country it is different and to some even offensive. There religion is more private. That is not a judgement as I am not saying it is good or bad. Just different. As a non Christian it took a while to understand. The comments are not meant to offend but said out of pride and love.
However Sherry even though your signature means a lot to you you can see how some respond. I would not change one word of it as it's you. Yet try to get that for some it is a red flag. Your charge as a Christian woman as I understand the teachings of Jesus is just to understand the passions it might invoke and to forgive and still love.
Cheryl I understand how when you saw her signature it just felt wrong. Many people would respond this way especially on both coasts. To you religion is private. You choose to go to Church and have religion as you see fit. Suddenly to see this on a dog group it felt out of place.
I understand the discomfort. It would be a real issue if in the body of the letter she spoke or urged you in the name of the lord to do one thing or another or seemed to denigrate someone else's belief. Yet we say a lot with our signature. I am a physician. If I included MD you would not balk. Nor would you if you learned from my title that I was a dentist, lawyer or accountant. It would be accepted. So Sherry in a way is likewise telling something about herself with this quote. She sees herself as a Christian woman and it is important to her, she is proud of her heritage and beliefs. You could assume if I chose to use my medical title many things about me as well. The point is we live in an area where it is the norm to speak of one's love for God and to express it openly. I think the challenge for yourself is to remember they are not disrespecting you. It is not about you or me a non Christian. It is how they express their love and devotion to God. Who could challenge the relationship they share with their God. It might be different then your way or my way and yet who would we be to judge.
Anyway I hope both you and Sherry remain in the group and now I have motivation to come to the next meeting not only to meet your dogs but also you. We are only human and we all make errors . If we look at all religious traditions and non religious alike we all are for forgiveness, love and reconciliation. I have enjoyed this lively debate. However at the end of the day I hope we can all say we could have done it better. That's the charge we all have.

This my original post. I was merely asking for religious tolerance within a secular dog group--that is all. I am not asking Sherry or anyone else to change their religion. I am not advocating one way or another for one religion or another. I am simply asking for tolerance, and I am BULLIED on the list. You people are so sick spititually as to be intolerant toward others. You are so full of hatred that it makes me ill. You need not worry that I will want to socialize with you.

>Does it not occur to you that there may be dog walkers who are Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, or maybe even agnostic or atheist? Why should those dog walkers adhere to the tiny sect of Southern Baptist??? I thought that the purpose of a dog group was to walk dogs, not to push a certain sect. I will be reporting you to the meetup.com headquarters for mixing YOUR religion with dog walking. Cheryl
