Do you prefer to meet in Berkeley or Oakland?

I live in Berkeley, but am open to meeting in Oakland near public transit.

What are the best days and times for you to meetup? How frequently would you like to meetup?

I'd like to meetup evenings or weekends, ideally once a week.

Are you studying Mandarin or Cantonese, or both?

Mandarin

What study materials do you currently use?

Chinesepod, Integrated Chinese textbooks, movies, language exchange (well, i guess that's a method, not a material)

Are you a native Chinese speaker?

Nope! But I like helping people improve their English and I think language exchange is super fun and helpful for everyone. :)

  • Hi Arielle,

I don't know any authoritative best seller list in China. But here (http://book.douban.com/) is where I go often for the latest Chinese book info. douban.com is a very useful Chinese website; it is also a great place to make connections with like-minded people!

One of my favorite modern Chinese novelist is Ailing Zhang (or Eileen Chang;张爱玲).

She used to work at the cal, Berkeley campus, in 1970s (?). :-)

  • Thanks for the greeting, Arielle! I strongly recommend Last Train Home. It is one of the best made films in recent years about China's rural to urban migrant workers. I just watched two weeks ago at Berkeley. Two thumbs up!

  • Hi Arielle! I newly joined this group and can't wait to meet everyone! I am a graduate student and now live at the East Bay. I am a native Chinese speaker and want to practice language with native English speakers while helping with Chinese-learning. This group looks awesome.

I can't agree more what you said "language exchange is super fun and helpful for everyone." :-)
