Class Description
Learn the fundamentals of stick fighting (escrima, kali, arnis) and Filipino-style shotokan karate in these free classes. Optionally, network with classmates to practice outside of class. You might be new to martial arts, wanting to get into your Filipino heritage, or an experienced person who wants to learn more about stick and knife fighting. Any way you cut it, stick fighting is a great art and lots of fun to learn!
Instructor and Group Organizer
The instructor, Rey Viray, grew up studying karate and Filipino martial arts in the Philippines where he 'won his tournaments' as he puts it. He studied Ki Aikido in El Sobrante and currently trains at Eskabo Daan, a school of Filipino Martial Arts, in San Francisco. Rey holds the rank of Guro (Teacher).
The group organizer, Sue Johnson, has done various martial arts including tae kwon do, bok fu style kempo, qigong, taiji, and Aikikai aikido. She had been studying with Rey since 2010. She knows how to fall, likes sticks, and is still trying to reconcile her love of recreational violence with her Buddhism.
