Choosing a Canon of Plugins

Many of the proposed Meetup topics are tied in popularity, but this one is going to be easiest to pull together while I'm busy looking for a new housemate. ;-)

We had a plugin-oriented meetup in 2009 and it's probably time to revisit the subject. What plugins can't we live without? How many plugins is it reasonable to use? Are there any plugins that everyone in the group always uses? Which plugins are obsolete now that we have WP 3.0?

This is your chance to find out which plugins other members of the group can't live without. We're going to try to create shortlists of:

  • The plugins we all use for all WordPress installs (e.g. Akismet)
  • The plugins we like best for blog-oriented sites
  • Our best plugins for CMS (page-focused) sites
  • The best media (audio, video, gallery, slideshow) plugins

Bring your favorite plugins--and make sure you test them with WordPress 3.0 before you recommend them!

I'm going to try creating a spreadsheet on the spot to see which plugins get the most votes, and publish our meetup recommendations on the message board and the WordPress Asylum site.

As usual, we'll have some time for general Q & A, and possibly some kind of giveaway at the end. (Which reminds me, if you've won a book in the past, write a review and post it to Amazon, and then send us all the link!)

Note: We meet from 1-3 PM, so you might want to bring lunch or snacks. Anyone who wants to bring snacks for the group would be welcome to--we'd even refund your $3.

I'm testing 3 slideshow plug-ins. 2 are Flash based - Slidepress and Showtime Slideshow. 1 is js (I prefer this) - Slideshow Gallery. Hopefully I'll have something to look at on judithjames.com/journal/
    What about video - anybody?

It's now possible to use VideoPress with self-hosted WordPress, though you still need an account at WordPress.com.

Excellent meetup! I think there was something for everyone... from novice (me) to super users like Anca, who learned about a new plug in and installed it on the spot. Sallie is a great moderator and very knowledgeable. It was a very impressive group of individuals. Thanks to everyone for all the great input and suggestions!

I'm sorry I missed this meetup, sounds like it was a great discussion. Will you be posting the excel file with the Plugins in the files section of the site? Thanks.

    Hi, Dustin.

I'm thinking of posting it as a Google Doc so everyone can edit it, but for now perhaps just uploading it to the Files section would be a good option. I did send it around to all the subscribers as an e-mail attachment.
