From a Fireworks Comp to a Genesis Child Theme, Step by Step

Linda Shum and I collaborated on this--she created the design in Fireworks for her employer, but then had to leave town, so asked me to work on it while she was gone.

My job was to get as far as I could in turning the design into a Genesis child theme, preserving the design as exactly as possible, with certain functions. My focus was on the home page design (tabbed slider and many widgets with tricky shaded backgrounds; widgeted footer; secondary menus in header and footer areas).

Linda and I will walk you through her creation of the design, what I did to implement it, the mistakes we made, and how we ended up making it work. (For the record, I spent about 18 hours on it and it wasn't finished yet by then, so this is not a small task.) Those of you with more experience can point out all the things we did wrong, and those with less experience can either decide this is more than you want to take on right now, or take notes and get ready to build your own.

The site in question is SparkPoint from United Way of the Bay Area, live as of June 2011.

Thanks to AppThemes for providing the pizza and to everyone for participating. Liked the new room setup for easier pizza access.

I enjoyed the topic and I am really interested in taking the Fireworks to Theme course that Anca mentioned.

I checked and WordCamp Reno is June 4-5, earlier in the month than our Meetup. Maybe we can get a group together to carpool and share hotel costs? We should take this to a separate topic.

I think I might want to go to the wordcamp. Will need to find a place to stay or maybe camp.

Oooh, Reno WordCamp...that would be close enough to actually attend. Let me look that up. (We'll still have a meeting in whatever month it is, but we might adjust the date.)

I think the Reno Wordpcamp is sometime in June, maybe July would be the best? Anyone else going to the Reno Wordcamp? They will have a second day for developers, looks really interesting.

I suggest we aim for June to be safe. Just sayin'.

Incidentally-- I got a very good eBook on this process at http://rockablepress.com/books/rockstar-wordpress-designer/. It was $25 and came with some nice sample PSDs to work with.

Great idea, Sallie, as cohost of this meetup I would love to share how to set up complicated css working with the wordpress dynamic widget. The site will not be finished until early May so perhaps the May meetup would work.
