Making WordPress Fly

If you use shared hosting, you can take some steps to speed up your WordPress site, guided by browser plugins like YSlow and Speed TracerCSS sprites, minifying CSS/JS, avoiding plugins and themes that are resource hogs, using caching plugins.

But if you control your own server, you can really make WordPress fly, even if the site makes lots of database calls. Learn about APC, Varnish, and nginx, the tools that managed hosting companies (and WordPress.com) use to provide amazing performance improvements. You, too, can use them, and you can even get VPS hosting for about the cost of shared hosting. It just takes a little know-how to set it up, and Stefan will tell you how. (We'll try to get Digital Ocean to sponsor the meetup.)

Will there be anything for those of us who do not want to want to manage our own server?

That'd be great, Tyler. I have a couple of basic slides, but I really want to get the members involved.

Actually, I was just trying to find out if there would be a range of solutions presented. I noticed that the thread of people who volunteered to present was rather old, it was not clear to me who was actually presenting and what. Most of our needs fall somewhere in the middle, needing more than shared hosting and less than dedicated server.

Ugh! Trying to get time off from work for this but it's not looking likely. What is the policy on any kind of documentation provided after the fact on the subjects covered. And what is the possibility of a repeat?

Yes, we post the slides each month, so you'll be able to see them.

You can get my slides for tomorrow's presentation on http://www.stefandida.... But you'll have to wait until then because I'll be hitting the publish button after I'm done. :-)

No word from DO on sponsoring so I suspect it's a "no".

Good Afternoon, I am excited to join this group. I am brand new to Word Press, and I am using Lynda.com to learn it, but I think being part of this group will help give me structure during this process.

Ah, Varnish, APC, Nginx... ok, I'll put some slides together and arrange a live demo of a droplet with a 1:1 performance difference of the same site running on (not cheap) shared hosting vs. the droplets I've used to show off just how much you can improve WP speed.

I can also talk about how to speed a WordPress site up with a CDN.

I can help out by talking about how to see what is making a site slow, or talk about cache plugins, or CDNs. Will need time to prepare.

I'd love to see this meetup. I can help w/ discussing minification.

OK, I can take lead. Ideally, I'd like to make it a demo, so it may take me a little time to put together.

Can you lead this? I'm only familiar with some of these tools and wouldn't be competent to do it.
