If you use shared hosting, you can take some steps to speed up your WordPress site, guided by browser plugins like YSlow and Speed Tracer. CSS sprites, minifying CSS/JS, avoiding plugins and themes that are resource hogs, using caching plugins.
But if you control your own server, you can really make WordPress fly, even if the site makes lots of database calls. Learn about APC, Varnish, and nginx, the tools that managed hosting companies (and WordPress.com) use to provide amazing performance improvements. You, too, can use them, and you can even get VPS hosting for about the cost of shared hosting. It just takes a little know-how to set it up, and Stefan will tell you how.
