Re: [wordpress-195] "wp-content" folder back-up?

I got explanations from 3 WPE tech support folks, and none mentioned secondary backups. Maybe they only do secondary backups for
their larger customers?

Please let us know what you hear from the WPE folks, Ben.

still seems unclear the frequency of these secondary backups i will be talking quite a bit with wp engine this week on another issue (one of the reasons i have tried to refrain form endorsing them wholeheartedly) i will try to bring this up and see if i can get any more clarity on this and share whatever it is they tell me. i will say that they do seem pretty genuinely interested in resolving real issues over there which is more then i can say for a lot of hosts.

This is the latest explanation I got from WPE about their backup process:

===

WP Engine's automated backups include your site's files/filesystem (themes, plugins, content, etc.) and database. However, WP Engine does not backup your 'uploads' folder (which contains any media uploads like photos and video). If requested in a support ticket, one of our engineers can provide you with a complete backup which includes the uploads but this is not something we do automatically.
===

I'm disappointed that a "managed" web hosting company would not automatically do a full backup. Though I am doing local backups (now), I would
like my hosting company to do the same.

Frankly, I would not have joined WPE if I had known this.

On a positive note, my website is back UP!!! :)

I've manually restored the images for  35 out of 1291 of my posts, but I am back to posting everyday.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and support!

Rose

Strange you’d think if that was the case they would’t be telling people things that make them think thats not the case i wonder what the frequency of those secondary backups is.

Here's an official answer from WP Engine's Jason Cosper:

So "/wp-content/*" (and "/wp-content/uploads/") is backed up during a secondary, off-site backup. So we keep copies of all of that content.

It's not currently included in the compressed backups we offer, but we can restore lost content if it is needed. I should know, I just did it for a customer the other day. ;)

Usually they do back of entire site. Some hosting specifically ask you what folder you want back up.
It's a case to case thing from different hosting companies. I use hostgator and they do back-ups of entire site.

So I'm in the process of extricating myself from Dreamhost. Yesterday, based upon other users' feedback I chose WP Engine as my hosting site.
Today in an email exchange w/ the WPengine tech staff, they mentioned that they do backups but not of
the /wp-content folder.

I am shocked. Is it standard procedure for Web hosting companies not to backup
the /wp-content folders? Since my site is an Art/Design site, I have a LOT of image in that folder.

BTW: Of course, I am planning to do local backups of my site. I am just expected the hosting company to be
backing up my entire site too!

thanks,
Rose
