Hi,
I'm a Graphic Design student at City College of SF. We have a Student Chapter of AIGA. We are looking to Re-Design our site use WordPress as our CMS. But, we are short on funds are looking for someone to possibly host out site for free or at a discount. Can anyone suggest a host whom might be willing to do this? Thanks.

If you really need it to be free, you could always try WordPress.com, though of course you can't use any plugins then and have to abide by their other restrictions. But shared hosting isn't very expensive, if for some reason you can't host it on the school's servers. It ought to be possible to put some kind of fundraiser together to come up with the $80-$100/year.

If not, I would check with the parent AIGA group to see whether they have server space to allot you, and then approach web hosting companies directly to see whether any might offer non-profit discounts. (In some cases you will need proof of 501 (c) 3 status for that, though.)

Dreamhost (Non-profit info located in the right column) provides free hosting to NGO's:

Non-profit organizations have dedicated themselves to making the world a better place. In recognition of their noble sacrifice and altruistic efforts, DreamHost is happy to provide hosting services free of charge to these groups!

This offer is limited to one shared hosting plan per nonprofit, and is only for US-based 501(c)(3) organizations. Domain registrations (other than any included with the plan) are not eligible for any discounts. Groups must be able to furnish DreamHost with an IRS-issued 501(c)(3) determination letter to qualify.

"I'm a non-profit!"

Great! Sign up for hosting with us, then fax your 501(c)(3) determination letter to 714-671-9098. Be sure to write your account number on the cover letter. We'll take it from there!

After which you'd better sign up for Sucuri.net's malware monitoring service, as DH has terrible security, among other problems. (They oversell their servers something chronic and do some weird things with FTP permissions and their home grown control panel.) But it's nice that they offer it, and it's possible other hosting companies have something similar; I haven't looked.

Seriously, though, I just cleaned up a client's hacked site on DH and have had other sites hacked there, and they do have a lot of issues. I tell people to avoid them and think it would cost you money to use their free service.
