We'll hike the Shell Ridge loops. It's about 3.5 miles. The elevation gain is 1100 feet. This is a moderate hike with hills. You should bring water, hiking shoes and poles (if you have them). Our pace will be slow-moderate. We will stop as needed. This is a no drop hike. We hike at the pace of the slowest person and stay together as a group.
Here's some information on the area:
Castle Rock Park is a entrance to access the Shell Ridge area in the City of Walnut Creek's largest open space unit, with trails for biking, hiking and riding through oak woodlands and grassland savannah on the lower flanks of Mount Diablo. Shell Ridge gets its name from the marine fossils left behind when the ocean waters that once covered the area receded.
What it offers: Approximately 31 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Bikes are permitted only on paved and unpaved roads over eight feet in width.
Dogs: Rangers recommend dogs remain leashed at all times. If they are off leash, dogs must be under positive sight and voice command.(please keep in mind there is abundant wildlife in the area, including coyotes, as well as cattle)
