Edgeryders is an *open consultancy, provided by an online community of citizen experts*. It provides focused advice generated through an open process. Openness makes the service: *self-correcting* (like Wikipedia); *truthful* (the community is too large to buy off, so it always tells the truth) and *democratic* (anyone can enter ER without permission). Edgeryders is incorporated as a social enterprise, spun off from a Council of Europe-European Commission project of the same name. *Why is it good?* *Good for the client*. ERs provide research and advice, mobilising collective intelligence on the client’s problem. *Good for the community*. The Edgeryders are “edgy” and radical: hackers, activists, artists, indignados, minorities from all over Europe are well represented. We have received requests to build a stronger community presence and unMonasteries ( networked place-based innovation residencies) in East, West and South Africa. *Good for individual changemakers*. Edgeryders puts itself forward as a possible partner for those members of the community that need some help with their journey. Sometimes we can and do send paid work their way. *Good for democracy and societal cohesion*. Through the diversity of participation. *Why are we doing this?* The community has functioned as a launchpad for many common projects that involved two or more edgeryders. The community stays online and growing, through our twin tools: the website and offline meetings - through a company funded by some community members. We think of Edgeryders as a public good. Most of its impact happens at the edges (through bottom-up collaboration). We accept it is neither possible nor desirable for the company to try to capture this value by acting as a gatekeeper. *Why is it a company, then?* We aim for sustainability and full independence. A social enterprise seems a natural vehicle for pursuing our goals. Since spinoff, we have received many unsolicited proposals for collaboration and we are convinced we can build financial sustainability on this basis.
