South Shiel Ridge (Glen Clunie)

  • May 24, 2014 · 8:00 AM

South Glen Shiel Ridge is a Munro baggers delight as 7 Munros and numerous tops can be climbed in long single outing. The walker can look forward to miles of high walking on narrowish ridge with grassy slopes dropping away on the south and cliffs sweeping into Glen Shiel on the northern side.

It can be broken into two shorter sections, but the intention is walk the whole ridge.

25 km/ 15.53 miles

I will be driving up from Edinburgh, either Friday night and camping or very early Saturday.

May I just point out this is a big day and a certain level of fitness (and determination) will be required.

I hope everyone had a grand day out in the hills yesterday. I did. It was good to make new friends.

  • Martyn

Hi all I've not heard from Penny or Martin Smith. I'll not delete them, but it would be good if they got in touch.

Miguel and Konrad, as you're new, I can only assume you'll be getting there yourself. And that you know what you're letting yourself in for!!!

To avoid doubt we'll meet at GR078118 map 33 at 8 am.

    May 22, 2014

    • Louise

Actually in konrad's defence he posted that a number of weeks ago . You obviously did not read it.!!!! Additionally I find that kind of response very unnecessary , inappropriate and offensive john ! Who am I walking with tomow !!!

      May 23, 2014

    • Martyn

Hi Konrad, ignore the comment from John. It was totally unacceptable and as organiser I've expressed my displeasure to him. i look forward to seeing you in the hills sometime soon. Martyn

Time to get organized, there is a nice spot for camping on loch Cluanie just before the Inn, I intend to travel up tomorrow afternoon, get there for early evening, pitch a tent and do some fishing on loch Cluanie. Set off in the morning to the end of the walk, leave my car and cycle back to the meet up point and meet everyone there. Then look forward to a pretty straight forward walk, simples :-)

    See you all tomorrow,

So Sammy (may be at Shiel Bridge campsite), Brian (wee Kintail bunkhouse? Friday night and myself are all based at end of walk. A lift down to start of walk (Cluanie inn part) would be great please. Don't fancy a 12 mile walk before we even begin...panic!

Hi Toni I will be coming from glencoe and will need to pass the start to get to you (another hour drive there and back to start) as you are all coming from nearer the end . So I am sure one of the boys shlld be able to take you to start of walk in the morning as you will all pretty much be staying around the same place ? Can someone who will be close to Toni arrange to give her a lift in the morning please ?

Hi folks, the walk is upon us. Forecast isn't great at the moment. I've emailed everyone, please response to the email rather than post your reply here.

It would good to know who is where and when. I understand some are starting at 8 am. Therefore why don't we all agree to meet then at GR078118 map 33 at 8 am.

Has anyone thought about getting cars to the other end…?

Looks like there will still be a few potential "no-shows" who haven't changed their status, or even bothered to post on here as to what their plans are. Which I think is a bit unfair this close to the walk, as it's way too late for anyone on the wait list now to try and arrange a weekend outing, especially with it being so far away. From reading through all the messages, their are 5 folks who haven't said if they are going or not. Martyn, does that tie in with responses to the email you sent out ? Apologies if I have offended anyone but I'm just trying to be helpful and to ensure we have cars at either end to allow us all to be re-united with our own vehicles on Saturday evening.

I had forgotten that I had mentioned this to a friend of mine weeks ago who is not part of the group, but he will be joining us. Hope that's OK? He will take responsibility for his own safety! Reckon it's the best part of a 4 hr drive assuming we might want a stop half way ish to stretch the legs etc. Green Welly at Tyndrum is a usual stop for me but it's up to Tania as to where / when we stop, if at all.

Never one for running up them . I done a 12 hr day on sunday with only 2 summits and it was bloody hard going . Calves are killing me today . So I am a bit anxious but will defo give it a go :)

Well said Martyn . My concern at the moment Is that if we do not have 2 cars for our particular group. I ain't trusting a taxi and I ain't walking all the way back to car . I am up in the area for a couple of weeks bagging munros. If it is not confirmed that we have 2 cars for the group planning on taking 10-12 hrs then I have no option but to plan something else. I did suggest we meet up beforehand perhaps in Edinburgh to discuss but this never took off . I will be staying by the clachaig so I have a 2 hour drive in the morning to get to you all . However it would be disappointing to get there and find a) no one there and b ) no organisation of cars (start and end ) for the groups. So would really appreciate if people clld confirm which group they are planning on walking , whether they have a car and if 8am meeting time is acceptable? If these details are not identified I will just do something else that day which does not leave me careless at the end :)

Hi Val, this dialogue is all part and parcel of a new club getting its self organised. This is all new to all of us and may be its not the best way, but at the moment its the only way. You've also known that there were 24 folk going for weeks.

Lots of people trying to organise lots of stuff.
    So I'll chip in.
I will be parked at the start of the walk for 8:00 a.m. on the day.
I can drop my car at the end of the walk if I get a lift back and I'll ferry people back to get cars when we finish. Or Ill let some one else drop their car and I'll drive them back to the start.
If we all meet at 8:00 a.m. at the start of the walk we can see how many cars we have and decide then what to do. At the end of the day you will not be stuck ...you can wait for a bus back or get a taxi back to the start. It will be a good day so don't worry lol.

    April 29, 2014

  • Martyn

I'm either looking to travel up with someone, or Ill drive and therefore there are places available to and from Edinburgh.

    April 28, 2014

  • Martyn

So, I'm sending you all an email asking you to confirm if you're still going. Respond within 7 days or I'll remove you from the list. Confirming your attendance will assume you've bought the map, read the descriptions, realised where these mountains are, thought about how you're getting there, considered overnight accommodation, etc.

Please note this event is a BIG day out requiring a level of determination and fitness that will only be achieved if you have regularly been out in the hills bagging, not one, but several Munro a day. Finally, if you find this email a little blunt, try organising an event: it's not fun.

Hi Martyn, and everyone else. I'm still a definite. I'm still in two minds as to whether or not to drive up from Edinburgh super early on the Saturday morning or stay over on the Friday night but I'll get this sorted this week. Any advice/thoughts from anyone on this would be appreciated. Either way I'll be driving back down on the Saturday night. I have plenty of room in the car if anyone needs a lift either way.

      April 28, 2014

    • Toni O' T.

Hi Martyn I'm a definite too. I have booked my accommodation and have been out almost every weekend hillwalking. I was up Ben Starav yesterday. Tired after it I admit but think it will certainly help towards the big walk.

Additionally agree with Martyn about fitness levels and skill although I say 10-12 hrs slow this still needs an element of fitness. Additionally I would feel rather uncomfortable if someone did not know how to navigate themselves of a hill if for some unfortunate reason you had to do this on yr own . And would expect individuals to have all the necessary kit in bag I.e head torch , enough food etc :)
