Buachaille Etive Beag (Stob Coire Raineach and Stob Dubh)

Will retry these two hills after the change of plan last time (due to poor weather).

These two hills are in Glencoe and are connected by a straight forward ridge, I'll decide whether to do the walk from the north or the south a bit closer to the time based on weather conditions. The walk is about 10km with 840m ascent and should take about 6 hours.

I plan to leave Edinburgh at about 7am to start on the hill at 9:15am.

I'll put up more details (weather forecast, route and meeting point) nearer the time. At the moment it looks like there are patches of snow higher up, with some larger patches on north facing slopes still holding on. However, temperatures are consistently above freezing and it is possible that the remaining snow could all melt by the time of the walk. I don't expect this to be a walk in winter conditions.

Fantastic day out, big thanks to Steve for organising and every one else for being great company. Perfect sized group, excellent weather and a couple of really nice Munros... what's not to like?

Hi Steve, can I have a lift from at the back of Nicholson Square Gardens on Saturday morning. Many thanks.

For those on the waitlist, it looks like we have one more space on the walk, picking up from Nicholson Square Gardens...

Hi all, the weather forecast for Saturday looks good, it should be clear but cold to start (below freezing), although warming to around 7 degrees by the afternoon. There may be patches of icy snow still lying on the ground higher up, but I don't expect to need crampons or ice axe (we can look for an alternate route if there is extensive icy patches), although I believe the ridge itself is OK. Take waterproofs just in case, and a hat and gloves would probably come in useful too.

We will probably do the walk from the North (the standard route) and so we can meet at the carpark off the A82 NN188562. This is shown on the map here:

The drive is about 2hr 30mins from Edinburgh so I'll aim to leave at around 7am so that we can meet at the carpark at 9:30am. It would be very helpful if drivers could e-mail me their phone number (I'll e-mail out my contact details shortly) just in case there are any problems finding meeting spots or running late etc...

Hi P Raj, if you could meet at the back of Nicholson Square Gardens where it joins Marshall Street (near to the Elephant & Bagels cafe, if that is still there), that would be very handy.

Hi I've just e-mail Allan to see if that last space still available. If it isn't I'll be looking for a lift too please.

I've got space for two or three, just waiting to hear back from someone about whether they can drive - looks like we'll need three cars leaving Edinburgh on Saturday morning.

I'm afraid my plans have changed and I'm going to need to work this Saturday, highly unfortunate it's a fantastic route, but this means my space in Allan's car is available. Thanks again Allan for offering.

Hi Steve, I did this walk last week and the conditions on top of the ridge between the two summits were absolutely fine.

Do I need any special equipment? Or just walking boots and waterproof etc?

    April 22, 2014

    • Steve M

      Hi Tania,

It is hard to tell at the moment. North facing slopes are still holding large patches of snow but many hills, particularly on their southern slopes, are mostly snow free. With this particular hill, we can do it from the north or the south,

      April 22, 2014

    • Steve M

so we should be able to find a reasonably snow-free route. You probably won't need crampons or ice-axe, but I'll post an update early next week to confirm this.

  • Toni O' T.

I'd love to walk this hill. Have been wanting to for ages. If I get off the waiting list I'd love a lift please. Here's hoping. Cheers.

Gutted I haven't able to join any walks yet, but had a problem with my knee and I'd have loved to have done this one, but having an op on the 30th April - soon be back on my feet and then I hope to take part and not just look at mail exchanges feeling jealous I can't be there - enjoy the day, sounds amazing again :)

I'll be driving up if anyone needs a ride, 3 places, big comfy car. Share of the fuel costs and we'll head off from Charlotte Square or similar city centre location. Post a comment here and I'll get back to you with details.
