This is a group for internationally minded people, whether they are local to Edinburgh or have come to Edinburgh to work or study. We are a very friendly and enthusiastic bunch who always welcome new faces and new ideas about trips and activities.
The Meet up is sponsored by Scotland Study Centre (SSC), and there are English and other language Meet up sessions help at the SSC premises at 29 Nicolsn Square, EH8 9BX. The sessions usually take the form of watching a short piece of video and discussing the issues raised. It is an opportunity to practice your English language discussion skills in a structured learning environment, and professional feedback is given, if you want it, on how to improve. Most members say that in everyday life people don't correct their mistakes and find it useful to have their main mistakes picked up in the Meet up sessions.
We also have a weekly ub session on Wednesdays from 8.30 in Usher's pub, West Nicolson Street This is just an informal get-together where we can all just get to know each other and have a chat - about anything!
We also have regular tris in the SSC minibus to places of historic and cultural interest. Recent trips have been to Traquair House and to Stirling Castle and the site of Bannockburn. Upcoming is a trip to New Lanark (24th February) - and wewill also be havinga weekend in the Highlands.
The group is free to join but in order to keep the group on meetup.com we are required to pay, and there are additional overheads involved in running the activities, so we ask for a contribution of £1 per activity /session attended. Also, if we go on a tour in the Scotland Study Centre minibus, there will be a contribution to cover transport (average of £10 for a full day trip), while any entrance fees to historical sites etc. would also be at your own cost.
It is important to RSVP when you are coming to the event, and change your RSVP if your plans change and you cannot make it. This is because preparation of materials is sometimes needed, or you place can be taken by another member.
If you would like to make new friends, improve your English or another language, learn about the history and culture of Scotland, explore more of Edinburgh - and further afield in the SSC minibus - and have a good noght ina pub on a regular basis, then join us and get involved! This is a wholly democratic group - and I want your ideas, feedback, and participation! For example, come along and lead some of the film sessions sessions, if you like - I'll help you prepare, and it's a great - free (Well, £1 cost) - way to improve your English and your confidence in public speaking!
Looking forward to your (enthusiastic????) response and to meeting some of you soon!
