I'll come prepared to present a brief book review of "Civilization, The West and the Rest" published in 2011. It focuses on the 6 "killer apps" that made it possible for the West to become the predominant economic and military power in the world, despite the small percentage of population in the West - the West in this case consisting of primarily Europe, the British Empire and the USA. The 6 "killer apps" are Competition, the Scientific Revolution, Rule of Law (including property rights), Medicine, Consumerism, and the Work Ethic. The book is packed with historical data to support the conclusions, but I will focus on key points and just a handful of examples.

Because it's a recent book, it also includes a look at the possible decline of Western Civilization with a focus on the financial black hole western society has been digging for past decade or two.

Lately attendance has been low - in the 6 to 10 range so we have fallen into the pattern of just having free-for-all current affairs discussions with each person speaking for about one minute at a time. As far as I am concerned the last two have been the best meetings we have held.

I ride the bus for 1.5 hours to attend this meeting so without a topic I can't judge whether this use of my time is a good investment. Libertarian thinking, eh what?
